Gaithersburg, MD –  A 31-year-old Lanham, Maryland man has died following a collision in Aspen Hill.

On March 23, 2022, at approximately 10 a.m., Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire-Rescue, responded to the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Hewitt Avenue in Aspen Hill for the report of a two-vehicle collision with entrapment. One of the vehicles involved had also collided with a wooden utility pole.

The initial investigation has revealed that a silver, 2011 Audi T5 was traveling northbound on Georgia Avenue, approaching Hewitt Avenue. As the Audi reached the intersection of Hewitt Avenue, it struck a gray, 2015 Mercedes GLK350 that was making a left turn from southbound Georgia Avenue to eastbound Hewitt Avenue. The collision caused the Audi to leave the roadway and strike a wooden utility pole causing significant damage.

Both operators were transported to Suburban Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the of the Audi T5 has been identified as Chad Edward Anthony Richards. Richards was initially stabilized but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on March 24.

This collision is now being investigated by the Montgomery County Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Jerry’s Subs and Pizza has closed its Aspen Hill location at 13645 Connecticut Ave, an employee of the store confirmed last week.

The location was closed today and all items in the restaurant were sold via auction and picked up today. Our very own Alex T. won auctions for two of the signs and picked them up today.

The employee we spoke to told us “we are going to open again maybe closer to Kohl’s”. He did not have a comment on the auction of everything inside the restaurant. We have reached out to management of the shopping center twice since we first learned of the news last week and are awaiting a response.

The closing of this location would leave Jerry’s with just one location left in Montgomery County (8517 Colesville Rd in Silver Spring), where the first Jerry’s opened on University Blvd in Wheaton back in 1954.

Last year, the door dash account for Jerry’s in Aspen Hill was changed to “Jay’s Subs and Pizza.”  We gave the restaurant a call at that time and were told that the restaurant would be undergoing a name change soon and that it will remain “almost the same as Jerry’s.” It doesn’t seem like the restaurant ever went though with the rebranding, as it returned to Jerry’s Subs and Pizza.

Back in December of 2020, we let you know about the Jerry’s Subs and Pizza in Burtonsville rebranded to Jeffrey’s Subs and Pizza.

The company once had over 100 restaurants in the mid-Atlantic region, but would be down to 5 once the Aspen Hill store closes. The Silver Spring location is not listed on the official Jerry’s website.

My Mom’s Place flower shop on Georgia Avenue was nothing but a pad of dirt when the Ember family family took over the space 50 years ago in the early 70s. They built up the location to be one of the most iconic flower shops in the area.

While the stand has been closed since the end of December, Mary Jo Ember who also owns Aspen Hill Florist (3833 Aspen Hill Rd in Northgate Plaza) across the street, has told us that it won’t be returning.

“We appreciate everyone’s support over the last 50 years.” Ember told us. “It just got to be a little too much” she said while emotionally discussing the closing of the stand.

Over the years ‘My Mom’s Place’ has become a landmark in Montgomery County, located in a highly visible part of Georgia Avenue in the Aspen Manor shopping center. The stand has now reverted back to the landlords of the shopping center, who will put something else in that does not have any connection to the Ember family, per Mary Jo.

The Ember family looks forward to continuing to serve the community through Aspen Hill Florist. Below, you’ll see an older photo of My Mom’s Place.
