MINISO, a Japanese themed novelty store, has opened on the first floor of Montgomery Mall (7101 Democracy Blvd) next to Macy’s.

According to Westfield Montgomery, “MINISO is a Japan-based, designer brand that places value on their quality, simplistic design, and low price. The global brand operates in over 40 countries, and has over 1,800 stores across the globe. Following their fast-fashion style, the company also launches new products every week – keeping up with trends. NSA Bethesda Update: At this time, there is no indication of an active shooter on the installation. A bomb threat is still under investigation. A lockdown remains in place.

Naval Support Activity Bethesda reports that Walter Read Medical Center in Bethesda is currently on lockdown due to a bomb threat / active shooter investigation. All personnel are being told to shelter in place. Walter Reed is advising all personnel to stay clear from the medical center.

ProShares, a premiere provider of ETFs based in Bethesda, plans to launch the first bitcoin-linked ETF in the United States (NYSE Ticker: BITO) tomorrow, October 19, 2021. BITO’s launch will mark a milestone for ETFs.

BITO will offer investors an opportunity to gain exposure to bitcoin returns conveniently, through a brokerage account. BITO can be bought and sold like a stock and eliminates the need for an account at a cryptocurrency exchange and for a crypto wallet.

Back in January we told you that Planta, an upscale plant-based restaurant featuring a menu by Chef David Lee, will be coming to 4910 Elm St at Bethesda Row, in the location formerly occupied by Cafe Deluxe (Cafe Deluxe closed permanently back in March of last year).

In July Planta let us now that they were aiming for a fall opening after originally hoping to open in the summer.

Colin Powell passed away today, October 18, at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda at the age of 84.

Powell, a four-star general, was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993 and served as the Secretary of State from 2001-2005 under President George W. Bush.

Hip Flask will be the name of the rooftop bar that will be a part of The Marriott Bethesda Downtown at Marriott HQ when it opens in January 2022, according to the Marriott website. Hip Flask will serve small plates and craft cocktails.

The new hotel will also feature a 360 degree lobby bar, and Seventh State, the hotel’s restaurant, will include a built-in Italian wood oven. Both outlets will feature indoor/outdoor dining.

Just three miles apart, every year Walt Whitman High School and Bethesda Chevy Chase face off in the “Battle of Bethesda” between the two schools’ soccer teams.

This year, the girls’ soccer JV and Varsity teams channeled their passion for this rivalry into a greater goal: playing for change by raising money and awareness for Soccer Without Borders– an organization that soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing under-served youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success.

According to a WSSC spokesperson, the overflow from the collapsed sewer pipe near 9240 Vendome Drive in Bethesda that began Friday was stopped at 11:10 am on Saturday.

The total volume of the overflow is estimated to be in excess of 10,000 gallons. They are still investigating the cause, and vandalism is a possibility.

Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., today announced his decision to end his tenure as the director of the National Institutes of Health by the end of the year. Dr. Collins is the longest serving presidentially appointed NIH director, having served three U.S. presidents over more than 12 years.
