Per the Maryland Lottery:
Prince George’s County man wins second-tier Mega Millions prize
Do you remember the excitement last month surrounding the historic Powerballjackpot run that ended on Nov. 7 with a $2.04 billion win? For a Prince George’s County man, it’s as if it happened only yesterday because it contributed to his $1 million Mega Millions win.

The Adelphi resident describes himself as an occasional Lottery player. “I don’t have a favorite game, really. Not even one I’ve played more than once or twice,” the hospital maintenance worker said. “And, I wouldn’t have bought a ticket that day but for all the talk I heard about the jackpot.”

Everything came together for him at 7-Eleven #11716 in Adelphi. “I was on my way home from work when the jackpot stuff popped in my head.” Not quite remembering which of the multistate, big jackpot games everyone was talking about, he bought a ticket for both. “Just to be sure, I got a Mega Millions and Powerball ticket.”

Maryland’s new Lottery millionaire admits being “freaked out” when he scanned his Mega Millions quick-pick ticket for the Nov. 8 drawing a few days later. “Man, all those zeros!” he said. Suddenly nervous, he left the store and headed home. “I kept telling myself that I’d seen $100,000 on the screen, that I had imagined that last zero.”

He claimed his prize this week at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The owners of 7-Eleven #11716, which sold the $1 million winning Mega Millionsticket, will receive a $2,500 bonus for their role in the winning story. You can find the lucky store at 9151 Riggs Road in Prince George’s County.

TJ Maxx has announced it is closing its Mazza Gallerie location at 5300 Wisconsin Ave. in the Friendship Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC. Signage on the store reads, “Friendship Heights T.J. Maxx closing Dec. 24th. Everything is 20% off this week!”, according to a report by PoPville.  Mazza Gallerie was purchased by Tishman Speyer at foreclosure auction for around $50 million back in August of 2020.  The Washington Business Journal reported in 2021 that Tishman Speyer was going to redevelop the center as apartments, and that the new owners planned to keep some retail space as well as the underground parking garage.

The mall has been mostly empty since the beginning of the pandemic. Neiman Marcus, one of the original stores in the mall, closed in 2020 and AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 announced in February 2021 that they would not be reopening. Construction of the mall began in 1977 and it was previously remodeled back in 1997.  From www.mazzagallerie.com: “Since 1978 Mazza Gallerie has served as DC’s choice for upscale retail and entertainment. Boasting 3 levels of shops and eateries and a full level movie theatre, Mazza Gallerie is a premiere destination for fun and shopping.”

“The County’s HIV epidemiological profile shows a need to address underlying racial/ethnic and other health disparities,” said keynote speaker Laurie Anne Sayles, a County Councilmember-elect. “Montgomery County’s Plan to End HIV must be grounded in health equity. This event is an opportunity to celebrate the many unsung heroes working across the county to raise awareness about prevention and treatment. We all play a role in eradicating HIV, and by addressing health disparities, we lay the foundation of ensuring our residents live safe and healthy lives.”

The 2022 Solidarity for Health Equity Awards will celebrate individuals, organizations and networks who were nominated for their work to alleviate racial, ethnic and other health disparities that impede progress and thwart public health efforts.

The event is part of the County’s push to end its HIV epidemic by 2030 after being named a priority jurisdiction for the Federal Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative in 2020. Dec. 1 marks two years since the public release of A Plan to End HIV in Montgomery County, which outlines strategies to reduce new HIV transmissions by 90 percent in 10 years.

To support Ending the HIV Epidemic efforts, County residents are encouraged to:

  • Get tested for HIV, even if they do not think they are at risk.
  • Seek treatment for HIV if they test positive. With successful treatment, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives and prevent transmission of HIV to others.
  • Ask healthcare providers about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), the HIV prevention medication, to reduce risk of HIV.
  • Learn the facts about HIV and talk with partners, family and friends about it.
  • Fight HIV stigma by showing support and compassion for people living with HIV.
  • The World AIDS Day Solidarity for Health Equity breakfast will also be livestreamed at https://worldaidsdaymc.org/.

Free or low-cost HIV testing, treatment and prevention services are available from the HIV Services program, which is part of the County’s Department of Health and Human Services.

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are asking for the public’s assistance as homicide detectives continue to investigate the death of a man following a house fire last year in Kent County. Just before 1 a.m. on Oct. 30, 2021, firefighters from the Community Fire Company of Millington and surrounding departments responded to 10210 Daisy Drive and discovered heavy fire coming from the interior of the two-story Cape Cod-style home.

According to investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the home was heavily damaged during the fire, causing the second floor to collapse into the first floor. During a subsequent search of the home, a male victim was located within the remains. The victim, identified as Kimm Anthony Knott, 51, of Millington, Maryland, was declared deceased at the scene. The Kent County (DE) Special Operations Team provided shoring support of weakened structural walls to allow investigators to remove the victim safely.

Deputy State Fire Marshals worked to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Investigators ruled that the fire was intentionally set, and the home was considered a complete loss. Knott’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. The autopsy determined his death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide. Investigators believe Knott was likely killed at about 11:55 p.m. on Oct. 29, 2021. These findings led Maryland State Police homicide detectives to take over the death investigation.

Homicide detectives are again seeking out any potential witnesses to this crime. Anyone who may have seen something on the day of the fire or has potential information about this case is asked to contact Maryland State Police at 443-783-7230.
