Gaithersburg Based Novavax Could Start Making Omicron-Specific COVID-19 Vaccine By January

Gaithersburg based Novavax announced that today that they could begin commercial manufacturing of a COVID-19 vaccine for the Omicron coronavirus variant by January of 2022. Novavax is currently testing whether or not its current vaccine works against the Omicron variant.


MCPS

Due to staffing shortages, Montgomery County Public Schools is now allowing weekly COVID-19 testing for staff, according to Bethesda Beat. Previously, MCPS said they would terminate any employee not fully vaccinated by October 29, unless they provided a medical exemption.

MCPS will now allow unvaccinated employees to submit a negative COVID test on a weekly basis, or face disciplinary action up to and including termination, according to a letter sent to MCPS staff.

Per Montgomery County/MCPS:

Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized for 5- to 11-year-olds. MCPS is partnering with the county’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Holy Cross Hospital to offer a number of free vaccination clinics for children at schools and county sites.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and other representatives from the County government who help lead the County’s ongoing COVID-19 response efforts will host their weekly, virtual media briefing at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Montgomery County’s indoor mask mandate will return this Saturday at 12:01am. Montgomery County has been at a “substantial transmission” level for seven straight days, triggering the reinstatement of the mandate.
