Eyewear brand Warby Parker, which does most of its business online, has opened a brick and mortar location in the old Hair Cuttery location at 136 Crown Park Ave in the Downtown Crown neighborhood in Gaithersburg.

The Crown store, which is MoCo’s second after Bethesda Row opened in 2017, carries the brand’s full optical and sun eyewear offerings including its first brand of daily contact lenses. The store will offer eye exams and children’s glasses that are only available in store.

The New York-based brand has opened multiple stores across the country in recent years after years of being an online-only brand.

Management from Crown in Gaithersburg has notified us that the concrete barriers in Decoverly have been removed as of yesterday

Decoverly drive is now open to traffic from Great Seneca Highway and Fields Road. The barriers have been there since Crown started moving people in back in 2013.

The 182-acre Crown consists of four neighborhoods– Downtown Crown, Crown West, Crown Central and Crown East, with streets that include Goodall Street, Hemingway Drive, and Hendrix Drive that are named for artists, musicians, scientists, and writers.

The original Crown Farm farmhouse, built in 1894, has been preserved and renovated and was recently sold as a private residence.

Verizon Wireless, located next to Downtown Crown Beer & Wine, was expecting to undergo renovations, but employees told us they were closing permanently a few days back. We are told fast-casual salad restaurant Sweetgreen will be moving in to the space next.

Sweetgreen currently has three MoCo locations, in Bethesda, Downtown Silver Spring, and Pike & Rose. Crown has been without a salad fast-casual restaurant since Chopt closed in early 2020 with plans to move that location to the Kentlands neighborhood.

There is no expected opening date for Sweetgreen, but construction is expected to begin in mid-2022.

Background on the upcoming high school:

Over the years the City has been actively working with the community and MCPS to secure schools in Montgomery County.

The City was able to secure a site as part of the negotiations related to the Crown Farm Annexation Agreement X-182 on August 7, 2006.

The location has been proposed by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) as a site for a new high school in the Gaithersburg Cluster. The undeveloped 30 acre site is adjacent to Crown Neighborhood Three and is located at the intersection of Fields Road and Omega Drive.

Under the terms of the annexation agreement the City will transfer the site to MCPS when two years of construction funding has been secured. In anticipation of securing the funding, MCPS has been begun its public outreach on the design development of the high school.

The City will also have the opportunity to provide a courtesy review of the site development plan as part of an agreement with MCPS. This will occur after the overall plan for the high school has been finalized.

Crown Farm Park Planning

The City of Gaithersburg has started planning for the City’s newest park, a 2.99 acre parcel located at the corner of Decoverly Drive and Steinbeck Avenue in Crown.

Per the City of Gaithersburg:

The park will occupy a portion of the original 175-acre property that was annexed into the City in 2006. While the parcel is a generous size, after accounting for required easements and stream valley buffers, the usable park space will be about 1.5 acres.

The 19th century Corn Crib Barn is the oldest surviving structure from the former England-Crown Farm. It will be undergoing preservation in late 2021.

A recent storm damaged the silos on the property, but they were quickly repaired.

The public is invited to participate in a survey, available June 1 – 22, 2021, to gain a better understanding of the types of uses and activities the community would like to see at the future park. Survey results will be used to develop a concept plan, which will be presented to the public for future comment.

ONLINE SURVEY

Survey ends June 22

“Creating a park design that incorporates open space for recreation and small community gatherings and maximizing the useable space requires careful thought and balance. The City welcomes the community’s input in this process by participating in our survey.”
