MCPS has Extended Distribution of Free Meals for Children

Montgomery County Public Schools will resume distribution of free meals to county children under 18 on Tuesday, September 8.

MCPS began offering free meals at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with the support of waivers from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These waivers expired at the start of the new school year, prompting the county to return to its traditional Free and Reduced Price Meals program which requires some students to pay.

However, in an unprecedented move, the USDA has recently extended free meal waivers through December 31, 2020.

“This extension of the summer program authority will employ summer program sponsors to ensure meals are reaching all children- whether they are learning in the classroom or virtually- so they are fed and ready to learn, even in new and ever-changing learning environments” says USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue.
