Novavax, a Gaithersburg-based biotechnology company dedicated to developing and commercializing next-generation vaccines for serious infectious diseases, and Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd. (SII), the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume, today announced that the National Agency of Drug and Food Control of the Republic of Indonesia, or Badan Peng was Obat dan Makanan (Badan POM), has granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for Novavax’ recombinant nanoparticle protein-based COVID-19 vaccine with Matrix-M™ adjuvant. It will be manufactured by SII in India and marketed by SII in Indonesia under the brand name COVOVAX™.

“The first authorization of Novavax’ COVID-19 vaccine exemplifies our commitment to equitable global access and will fill a vital need for Indonesia, which despite being the fourth most populous nation on earth, continues to work to procure sufficient vaccine for its population,” said Stanley C. Verizon Wireless, located next to Downtown Crown Beer & Wine, was expecting to undergo renovations, but employees told us they were closing permanently a few days back. We are told fast-casual salad restaurant Sweetgreen will be moving in to the space next.

Sweetgreen currently has three MoCo locations, in Bethesda, Downtown Silver Spring, and Pike & Rose. Crown has been without a salad fast-casual restaurant since Chopt closed in early 2020 with plans to move that location to the Kentlands neighborhood.

Per the City of Gaithersburg:

Additional restrictions are in place for City of Gaithersburg employees. Masks are required in all indoor spaces unless the employee is alone in a private, enclosed space not accessible to the public. Employees must also wear masks outdoors when six feet of distance from others cannot be maintained and when riding with at least one other person in a City vehicle or on motorized City equipment.

A couple days ago Lapu Lapu, which will be the sister restaurant of popular Rockville/North Bethesda/Kensington restaurant Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, announced via Instagram that it will be opening in the Kentlands neighborhood of Gaithersburg.

The new restaurant will be taking over the 325 square foot storefront that was formerly home to Tex-Mex restaurant Peppers, located next to Vasili’s.

After more than four years of operations in Rockville, Saints Row has announced they will be moving to Old Towne Gaithersburg.

The brewery will be taking over the former Brawling Bear production and taproom facilities at 15 Fulks Corner Ave. Brawling Bear ceased operations last year.

The Kentlands neighborhood in Gaithersburg has seen plenty of changes in recent years, but still have three restaurants many have been asking about since the announcement of the impending arrival of Burton’s, Chopt, and Java Nation.

The company’s application for Conditional Marketing Authorization (CMA) marks the first submission for authorization of a protein-based COVID-19 vaccine in the United Kingdom.

You can now order Barstool Bites locally through DoorDash and UberEats. The new “restaurant” is a “ghost kitchen” being prepared out of Buca di Beppo at 112 Kentlands Blvd in Gaithersburg.

Construction on the exterior of the new Starbucks at the Spectrum in Gaithersburg is nearing completion. The restaurant is currently receiving deliveries for equipment and furniture.

No opening date has been announced but Spectrum has told us the location is expected to open by the end of the year.

The City invites you to celebrate Native American Heritage Month with educational & cultural presentations that include virtual programming, an official proclamation, and a special display at the Casey Farmers Market with vendor Ekowah Coffee & Running Strong with American Indian Youth. Residents are encouraged to learn about & celebrate Native American culture and participate in local events & programs taking place throughout the month, many coordinated by the City’s Multicultural Affairs Committee (MAC).

An official proclamation designating November 2021 as “Native American Heritage Month” in the City of Gaithersburg was presented at the October 18 Mayor & City Council meeting. The proclamation was received by Dr. Michelle Alexander, Media Specialist at Richard Montgomery High School. Dr. Alexander is part Piscataway Indian, the only state-recognized tribe in Maryland. She is the chair of the Cultural Diversity & Awareness Action Team, sponsor of the Diverse Voices student club, and she continually educates students and other educators on the reality of Native issues.
