Ichiban Restaurant, 2020

A big loss was felt in the community when Ichiban Restaurant at 637 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg closed its doors on September 12, 2021 after over 35 years in business. Ichiban specialized in Korean BBQ and sushi, and was known for their popular lunch buffet. But did you know that the former owners, which took over the restaurant in 2005, also own two other locations that offer many of the items found on the Ichiban menu?

The restaurants are Aery Food and Ichiban Mikoshi Sushi, both located inside the LOTTE Market at 221 Muddy Branch Rd Gaithersburg. Menu items at Ichiban Mikoshi Sushi include the Spider Roll (Deep-fried soft-shell crab, avocado, cucumber, crab, tobiko) and the Flying Dragon (California roll, dressed in a half sheet of whole baked eel, eel sauce, crunch, and masago) while Aery features items like Jok Bal (Korean pig trotters cooked in soy and other spices, served with a salted shrimp paste) and Soon Dae (Sliced Korean blood sausage). Unclaimed $100,000 Powerball Ticket Sold in Gaithersburg

A $100,000 winning Powerball ticket was sold on September 5 at the Harris Teeter located at 323 Copley Place in Gaithersburg. The ticket remains unclaimed as of September 12, according to the Maryland Lottery. Other MoCo winners from the past week include a $10,000 scratch off sold at 7-Eleven (121 Kentlands Blvd) in Gaithersburg, a $15,000 Keno ticket sold at Brighton Beer & Wine (225 Muddy Branch Road) in Gaithersburg, and a $10,606 Racetrax ticket sold at Sunshine Ethio (6907 New Hampshire Ave) in Takoma Park.

Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. Prizes of up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. All Maryland Lottery retailers are authorized to redeem tickets up to and including $600. More information is available on the How To Claim page of mdlottery.com.

My Cup Runneth Over Southern Cuisine to Open in Gaithersburg

Popular local food truck My Cup Runneth Over Southern Cuisine has announced it will be opening a brick and mortar location at 8405 Snouffer School Rd in Gaithersburg, the former site of Jazzy Seafood. No opening date has been announced but the owners tell us they hope to open in about a month. You can find their food truck at 9801 Centerway Rd in Montgomery Village every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1-6pm.

According to their website, “Established in 2010, we started out in Jackson, MS where we owned a coffee shop/bakery & our Downtown location was full scale. We relocated back to Maryland in 2016 where we now cater & operate a mobile food truck. We specialize in southern Soul Food; Smoked BBQ ribs, Fried catfish, pulled pork, shrimp po-boy, buffalo wings, fried chicken, mac n cheese, collard greens, candied yams, bbq baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw a variety of cakes & desserts.”

Spirit Halloween Now Open in Gaithersburg and Rockville, Coming Soon to Burtonsville

Spirit is now open in Gaithersburg (Rio) at the former Charming Charlies, located at 101 Boardwalk Place and in Rockville at the former Pier One, located at 12137 Rockville Pike (Pike Center). The location in Burtonsville at the Former Fashion Bug, located at 15791 Columbia Pike, is expected to open soon. During the Halloween season, Spirit operates over 1,400 store locations in North America. The Spirit Halloween website is open year-round, offering its in-store products online. The stores are usually open for 30 or 60 days prior to Halloween.

Joe Marver created the Spirit Halloween business model, a pop-up store catering to Halloween revelers. Starting with his first pop-up location in the Castro Valley Mall in 1984, he grew Spirit Halloween to 60 seasonal stores nationwide before it was acquired in 1999. His approach to short-term leases, locations, and the stocking of widely varied merchandise was novel in the Halloween retail sector.

The theme, “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community,” highlights the message that integrated evidence-based care, strong family & community support, and dedicated service providers work together to provide effective treatments & practices, making recovery from mental & substance use disorders in all its forms possible & sustainable.

A month-long “Gaithersburg Goes Purple” initiative will highlight the City’s support. Activities include the illumination of City Hall, Wells/Robertson House, and the Youth Centers in purple light, a social media campaign celebrating recovery successes, educational resources at community outreach events, a 34^thanniversary celebration of Wells/Robertson House, and more.

MCFRS Respond to Collision Involving Ride On Bus Wednesday Morning in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision involving a Ride On Bus on North Frederick Ave (355) and Maryland Ave in Gaithersburg that occurred Wednesday morning, August 31 around 9am. Some lanes on northbound 355 are blocked and drivers should expect residual delays. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, there were no life-threatening injuries sustained. Press Release: Detectives Investigate Vehicle Crash into Gaithersburg Townhomes; Victim’s Identity Released

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a vehicle collision that occurred on the afternoon of Monday, August 29, 2022, in the 400 block of Orchard Ridge Dr. in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 2:48 p.m., Montgomery County and Gaithersburg Police officers along with Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for a traffic collision involving a vehicle that crashed into two townhomes.

Update: Driver of Vehicle That Crashed Into Gaithersburg Townhomes Has Died

Victor Cascella, 62, of Gaithersburg has died from injuries sustained after crashing his car into two Gaithersburg townhomes on August 29. According to Montgomery County Police, “the investigation by detectives has revealed that the driver of a 2016 white BMW was traveling southbound on Orchard Ridge Dr. when, for reasons unknown at this time, crossed over the center median, left the roadway and crashed into the townhome residences of 432 and 434 Orchard Ridge Dr. The BMW and building engulfed in flames damaging both residences as well as 430 and 428 Orchard Ridge Dr.” Investigators believe the man was suffering from a medical emergency at the time of the crash.

According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services Pete Piringer, Fire/Explosive Investigators believe that the fire began in the vehicle’s engine compartment before spreading to house. The inhabitants of the homes were temporarily trapped upstairs, but rescue units were able to get them out with ladders. Six adults have been displaced and damages are estimated to be $400,000.
