Montgomery County Sheriff Darren M. Popkin announced that he will not seek an additional term earlier this afternoon. Prior to his election on November 2, 2010 and re-election in 2014, Sheriff Popkin was the Chief Deputy, second-in-command of the Sheriff’s Office for twelve years.
During a 30 year law enforcement career Sheriff Popkin rose through the ranks, serving in the Sheriff’s Office Criminal, Family, Civil and Court Services Divisions. Sheriff Popkin continues his involvement in innovative programs designed to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in the County. He was on the strategic planning committee responsible for designing and implementing the interagency Montgomery County Family Justice Center (FJC) which opened in May, 2009 and has since served over 6,000 clients. Sheriff Popkin continues his executive management role with the FJC.
County Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Evan Glass Commemorate Pride Month with Progress Pride Flag Raising Ceremony
on Monday, June 7th, County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmember Evan Glass, and other Councilmembers joined together to officially commemorate Pride Month in Montgomery County by raising the Progress Pride Flag in Rockville outside of the Executive Office Building. Since 2019, Councilmember Glass has spearheaded this annual commemoration and organized numerous community events to promote acceptance and inclusion across the community.

Council President Tom Hucker and County Executive Marc Elrich will be hosting a bill signing for Ezechiel’s Law tomorrow at 9am in Rockville. Ezechiel’s Law requires landlords and apartment building owners to install and maintain window guards in apartments with children under the age of 10.
Police Advisory Commission to Hold First Meeting on June 14, Asking Residents For Thoughts on Drug Enforcement in The County
According to Montgomery County, “the Policing Advisory Commission was created in 2019 by the Montgomery County Council in response to the ongoing public dialogue around policing practices and as an effort to increase community involvement in matters of public safety. The Commission’s mission is to advise the Council on policing matters and recommend policies, programs, legislation, or regulations with regards to policing.
