For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 31, 2022

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing man from Laytonsville.

Bobby Chavis, age 57, was last seen on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at approximately 3 p.m., at his residence in the 5800 block of Riggs Road.

Chavis is approximately 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weighs 210 pounds. He has brown eyes and black and white hair. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, grey sweatpants and black Nike sneakers.

Chavis may be in the Washington, D.C. area.

Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Additional Information Regarding This Morning’s Explosion in Laytonsville

The explosion occurred at 23601 Laytonsville Rd, which is the headquarters of  Ruppert Landscape Company.

According to Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein, the explosion is believed to have come from the propane that supplies the heating and hot water at the house.

One person was inside and two people were outside of the building when the blast occurred. One person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

An employee of the building smelled gas and notified the local gas company.

House Collapses After Explosion in Laytonsville This Morning

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue are currently on the scene of a single family home that collapsed this morning after a propane explosion.

MCFRS is reporting that the explosion occurred around 8am in a home off of Laytonsville Rd. Two people were rescued and are being treated for injuries.

From MC Emergency Management: Fire activity closes all lanes of Laytonsville Rd. (MD-108) in the area of Rocky Rd. This could be an extended closure. Expect significant delays. Seek alternate route.

Fatal Crash on Airpark Road Near Muncaster Mill Road

Shortly before 11PM Sunday, Montgomery County Police and Fire Rescue personnel responded to a serious head-on crash on Airpark Road near Muncaster Mill Road at the Airpark Road curve.

Responders arrived and found a head-on crash with 3 patients. Some of the patients had to be freed from the wreckage using the extrication tools on the Laytonsville District Volunteer Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue Squad.

One adult and one minor were extricated and transported to an area trauma center with serious life-threatening injuries. Another adult was transported to an area trauma center with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Airpark Road is closed for investigation.

Laytonsville Man Shot and Killed by MoCo Sheriff’s Deputy, Montgomery County Police Investigating

Per Montgomery County Police:

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred yesterday in the area of MD-108 (Olney Laytonsville Road) and Fieldcrest Road.

At approximately 8:01 yesterday morning, Saturday, February 6, the Emergency Communications Center received numerous calls for the report of multiple collisions in the 6000 block of MD-108 (between Riggs Road and Fieldcrest Road).  Callers to 911 reported that the driver of a Volkswagen sedan struck multiple vehicles and was driving and acting erratically.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy was driving in the area at the time of the call and was the first law enforcement officer to arrive at the scene.  The deputy encountered the driver of the Volkswagen in the area of MD-108 and Fieldcrest Road.  During this encounter, the driver of the Volkswagen struck the deputy with a long piece of wood in the area of the head and neck.  The deputy shot the male.

During the interaction, the deputy radioed for assistance.  Additional officers and Fire & Rescue personnel, already en route to the call, arrived and assisted in attempting life-saving measures.  The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The man is being identified as Kevin Costlow, age 52, of Laytonsville.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an established procedure, once Major Crimes detectives complete their investigation of the deputy-involved shooting, the findings will be submitted to the Howard County’s State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
