COVID-19 vaccines are now available for Marylanders six months and older, according to the Maryland Department of Health. Visit https://montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/vaccine/ for information on vaccine clinics in Montgomery County.

“We welcome having COVID-19 vaccines to help protect our youngest Marylanders against severe illness, hospitalization, or even death from this virus and strongly encourage parents to vaccinate their children,” said MDH Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. “We have been preparing to receive these COVID-19 vaccines and, utilizing our vast network of pediatricians, family practitioners, federally qualified health centers, pharmacies, and local health departments, will begin distributing them equitably across the state right away.”

Statement from Sidney Katz on Positive COVID-19 Test Result

“This morning I tested positive for COVID-19. Thankfully, I am fully vaccinated and double boosted against the virus and am only experiencing mild symptoms. I am currently isolating in accordance with CDC guidance and will continue to work remotely.

“I encourage all eligible Montgomery County residents to get fully vaccinated and boosted to best protect themselves and their loved ones against this virus.”

Montgomery County Council Meets on June 21 at 9 a.m. to receive a briefing on the review process for the Thrive Montgomery 2050 Plan and the 2022 report of the Charter Review Commission

The Council will meet on Tuesday, June 21 at 9 a.m. The meeting will begin with two proclamations. The first, presented by Council President Albornoz, Councilmember Katz and County Executive Elrich, will recognize Elder Abuse Awareness Month. The second, led by Councilmember Jawando, will commemorate Juneteenth.

Crown Fried Chicken Now Open in Silver Spring

Crown Fried Chicken is now open at 1909 Seminary Rd in Silver Spring, taking over the former location of Krazy Steve’s (and Armand’s Pizza before that.) The restaurant is open 10am-9pm daily.

Crown Fried Chicken opened its first Montgomery County location at 9120 Rothbury Dr. in Montgomery Village (next to Athens Grill) in March of 2021 and closed the location in February of this year. The menufeatures various chicken and waffle combinations, omelets, wings, cheesesteaks, and gyros. The chain is known for using Halal chicken and has locations across the east coast. The closest franchise locations are in Hyattsville, Waldorf, and Washington, DC.

Councilmember Friedson Introduces the Paid Parental Leave Act

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 14, 2022—Today, Councilmember Andrew Friedson introduced two bills to benefit working parents in Montgomery County government. Bill 10-22, the Paid Parental Leave Act, would provide six weeks of paid parental leave for County employees. In addition, Bill 11-22, the Right to Nourish Act, would require the County to provide lactation rooms or alternative accommodation for employees in its buildings. All other Councilmembers are cosponsors of both bills.

“I believe that Montgomery County government, as an employer of almost 10,000, must lead by the power of its example. We must model an environment that acknowledges, values and uplifts women, parents and families,” said Councilmember Andrew Friedson. “Historically, women in the workforce have been overburdened and under supported. COVID-19 has only exacerbated existing challenges. Helping new parents productively balance their work and family lives will strengthen the County government workforce and improve services we provide to residents.”

Montgomery County Council Committee Meetings on June 16, 2022

The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) Committee will meet on Thursday, June 16 at 10 a.m. to discuss the County’s Racial Equity and Social Justice Action Plan, receive a briefing on County income tax estimates and discuss the Tax Supported Fiscal Plan Summary for the FY23-28 Public Services Program.

The members of the GO Committee include Chair Nancy Navarro and Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Sidney Katz.

Statement of County Executive Elrich:

“We are currently experiencing multiple incidents of hate in Montgomery County over the past two weeks. On May 31, KKK imagery appeared on internet app searches for Damascus High School. On June 2, in Kemp Mill, antisemitic flyers were posted at Ride-On Station. Last week, on June 7, swastikas were carved at a MARC train station in Garrett Park. And, over past the weekend, flyers with references to groups affiliated with the KKK were discovered in Chevy Chase.

After the COVID-19 pandemic caused cancellations in 2020 and 2021, Independence Day fireworks and celebrations are back in a big way this year. Below is a list of all the MoCo fireworks displays that have been announced:

County Council Introduces Security Camera Incentive Program to Combat Violent Crime

“Violent crime has increased both locally and nationally, but we can utilize camera technology to help solve these crimes,” Councilmember Rice said. “Police recently used security camera footage to help solve a tragic murder in Germantown. By making security cameras available to members of the community who might not otherwise be able to afford them, we are empowering our residents to help make our communities safer.”

“I am pleased to support this program. It is another step forward as our community comes together to help solve crime in all ways possible,” said Councilmember Katz, who serves as the Public Safety Committee Chair.
