Montgomery Village

Permanent signage is up at Kobe Japan Hibachi & Sushi, which will be located at 19226 Montgomery Village Ave, next to Moe’s Southwest Grill in the Montgomery Village Center. Kobe Japan has additional locations at 1163 University Blvd E in Takoma Park and 13623 Georgia Ave. Suit A in Aspen Hill. According to their website, the menu features sushi, sashimi, spring rolls, bento boxes and hibachi. Construction is currently ongoing on the interior of the restaurant and no opening date has been announced.

Last week, BooBoo Pho opened at 19230 Montgomery Village Ave, also in the Montgomery Village Center. The restaurant is currently offering a grand opening special of 15% off orders through March 3. Menu items include spring rolls, Pho (noodle soup), sandwiches, vermicelli bowls, salads, and stir fry. BooBoo Pho is open Monday-Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-7pm.


Beyond MoCo

The Bazaar by Chef Josés Andrés is now open at the Old Post Office building at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. According to the restaurant, “The Bazaar takes guests on a sensory adventure where anything is possible and pays homage to José’s Spanish roots and inventive style. The culinary experience in Washington, DC will offer The Bazaar’s signature playful dishes, while infusing new menu items that boast an Americana flair and nod to US history.” Andrés gained fame as the chef at the Washington, D.C., tapas restaurant Jaleo. Locally, Andrés owns Spanish Dinerat 7271 Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda (formerly Jaleo) as well as DC restaurants China Chilcano, Jaleo, Oyamel, and Zaytinya. Full details below: 

José Andrés Group is proud to introduce The Bazaar by José Andrés in the historic Old Post Office building in Washington, D.C., relaunched in 2022 by CGI Merchant Group, in partnership with Hilton under the Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts brand. The opening of The Bazaar at Waldorf Astoria Washington DC signals the culmination of a 30-year journey for Chef Andrés, who has dreamed of opening a restaurant in the historic building since he arrived in Washington, DC in 1993.


Bethesda

Sweetgreen has reopened its Bethesda location at 4831 Bethesda Ave. The restaurant has been closed for renovations the past several months. Sweetgreen opened its new Gaithersburg location at 299 Copley Place D100 in Downtown Crown back on January 24. Additional information on the Bethesda reopening below:

“To celebrate the reopening and the return to sweetgreen’s origin city of D.C., the Bethesda location will be hosting a party on Friday, February 10! Guests can stop by and enjoy a succulent bar by The Sill, greeting cards by Right Place Studio (the artist behind the stores Source Board!), music by DJ Louie Flaco and sweetgreen swag by Junes Bags. All of these giveaways, including some surprise sweet treats, will be available while supplies last.


Gaithersburg

Coming Soon signage is up at TaKorean, a Korean taco grill that is taking over the recently-closed Nalley Fresh location at 261 Kentlands Blvd in Gaithersburg. The restaurant offers Korean style tacos and bowls. This will be opening its first location outside of D.C and is advertising a spring opening.


Bethesda

The annual “Savor Bethesda” Restaurant Week, organized by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, takes place from Thursday, February 16 – February 26, 2023. Last week we reported that the Montgomery Village Center has been sold for $40.25 million according to a report by Maryland Newsletters. Per the report, “Atlantic remained in the deal as the 131,000 square foot center traded from a partnership that included Walton Street Capital and Atlantic, to a new one, headed by Petroleum Marketing Group and, again, Atlantic. The new owners paid $40,250,000.” The shopping center was built in 1969 and is currently undergoing a $20 million renovation. It’s anchored by Aldi and Big Lots, and is home to Ledo Pizza, a recently opened Starbucks, Dollar tree, Advanced Auto parts, and more. Gaithersburg

Signage is up for Asian Cuisine and Seafood at 8035 Snouffer School Rd in Gaithersburg, the former site of China King. No additional details about the restaurant are available but construction is currently ongoing in the interior of the building. Asian Cuisine and Seafood will be located between 7-Eleven and El Salvadoran restaurant El Encanto.

China King closed this past June after over 20 years in business. The owners told us that difficulty staffing and pandemic woes helped them to decide it was time to retire. China King was known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and for using high quality fresh ingredients.


Aspen Hill

Jersey Mike’s has announced it will be opening its upcoming restaurant at the Northgate Plaza in Aspen Hill on Wednesday, February 15, at 10am. The restaurant, which is currently hiring, will be taking over the  location that was formerly home to Body & Brain Tai Chi– between Dunkin’ and Roy Rogers. Additional details on the grand opening festivities will be announced soon.

Jersey Mike’s was founded as Mike’s Submarines in Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956. Peter Cancro started working at the restaurant in 1968 when he was 14 and the shop was on its third hour. Three years later the shop went up for sale again and with the help of a local high school football coach who was also a banker, Cancro was able to pull together $125,000 to buy it at age 17. He began to franchise the restaurant in 1987 and now has over 2,000 locations with various locations across Montgomery County, including in Burtonsville, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, Rockville, and Wheaton.


Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire at the Sardi’s Pollo A La Brasa restaurant at 430 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg on Thursday around 6pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, there was a fire in the restaurant’s ductwork and the sprinkler system was activated. The fire has been contained and there are no reported injuries. The building inspector, code enforcement, and health inspector have been notified. We will post an update when additional information is available.

Per Gaithersburg Police: “Traffic Alert – N Frederick Avenue traffic incident closes all lanes of N Frederick Avenue (MD 355) between Odenhal Avenue and Dalamar Street. Expect significant delays. Seek alternate route.”


Wheaton

Popular Wheaton Thai restaurant Nava Thai at at 11301 Fern St. has closed. The restaurant, which was located in the old Sir Walter Raleigh building, has been open for approximately 16 years. The restaurant previously announced that it was closing back in September but decided to remain open for several more months “due to an outpouring of support” from the community.

The restaurant has been a local favorite that has been featured in various publications throughout the years. Below is an excerpt from a 2008 Washingtonian article, highlighting the fandom the restaurant quickly garnered soon after opening in Wheaton.
