Taste of Bethesda Food Festival Cancelled

The annual Taste of Bethesda Festival scheduled for October 2, for the second year in a row, will not be taking place due to the recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

The Downtown Bethesda Management organization and Bethesda Urban Partnership announced the cancellation on August 31st.

Traditionally the festival features live entertainment as the community strolls the streets filled with local vendors from nearby restaurants. Previous evens have attracted over 45,000 individuals.

Smaller-scale activities, such as live music at The Streetery and “yappy hour,” will continue in Bethesda.

Last year the Bethesda urban partnership replaced the event with an 11 day restaurant promotion event where Downtown Bethesda offered fixed-priced menus. Currently, there is no word on a replacement to take place.

The announcement was first reported byDan Schere from Bethesda Magazine.

Updated 9/30: gorjana has released the following details on it’s Bethesda opening:

Opening October 15th
Address: 4810 Bethesda Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814
Hours: Mon – Thurs: 10am – 7pm; Fri – Sat: 10am – 8pm; Sun: 11am – 6pm

gorjana, the popular Southern California based jewelry brand, announces the opening of its newest retail location at the Bethesda Row neighborhood. gorjana continues an impressive retail expansion with Maryland becoming the 23rd retail storefront throughout the US since its first brick and mortar opened in 2016.

Located at 4810 Bethesda Avenue, the new gorjana storefront will be outfitted with the brand’s signature details including light, mango wood finishes, brass hardware details, live greenery and blue bohemian shibori fabrics reminiscent of the Pacific Ocean. Upon entering the store, guests are meant to feel as if they’re walking into a welcoming coastal bungalow in the brand’s hometown of Laguna Beach, California.

“While our roots are based in Laguna Beach, our customer base in the Washington, DC and Bethesda areas has been growing exponentially over the years, so we are thrilled to launch our retail experience at Bethesda Row,” said Gorjana Reidel and Jason Griffin Reidel, gorjana co-founders. “We look forward to bringing our quintessentially Californian style further into the East Coast and we are excited to introduce and re-introduce the community to gorjana.”

To further immerse the brand, gorjana will be commissioning a mural with members of the local community on the 80 foot exterior of the Bethesda location. The mural will become a centerpiece of the storefront and will provide shoppers a fun and interactive moment outside of the store – to help compliment the warm and inviting interior.

“We are pleased to welcome gorjana’s first DC-metro location to Bethesda Row’s exciting and evolving mix of retail shops and restaurants,” says Vanessa Mendoza, Senior Director with Federal. “With its classic style, the beautiful jewelry line is an ideal fit for the types of brands and products our customers and neighbors love to shop,” Mendoza adds.

Guests will be able to take advantage of on-site bespoke engraving while shopping the latest gorjana collections, fine jewelry as well as its leading core items with prices ranging from $38 to $700.

Store hours will be 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., daily.

As of now, we don’t have an opening date for the store.

Washington Business Journal is reporting that Tishman Speyer, the owners of Mazza Gallerie shopping mall located at 5300 Wisconsin Ave NW in DC, are looking to redevelop the center as apartments. The report says that the new owners plan to keep some retail space as well as the underground parking garage.

Mazza Gallerie sold at a foreclosure auction for around $50 million back in August of 2020.  The mall has been mostly empty since the beginning of the pandemic. Neiman Marcus, one of the original stores in the mall, closed last year and AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 announced in February that they would not be reopening. Construction of the mall began in 1977 and it was previously remodeled back in 1997.

From www.mazzagallerie.com: Since 1978 Mazza Gallerie has served as DC’s choice for upscale retail and entertainment. Boasting 3 levels of shops and eateries and a full level movie theatre, Mazza Gallerie is a premiere destination for fun and shopping.

Former ShopRite Parcel in Orchard Center on Cherry Hill Rd (Calverton) Acquired For $16M

According to a report in the Commercial Observer, the former site of ShopRite in the Orchard Center at 12028 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring has been acquired by MCB Real Estate for $16 million.

The Orchard Center is currently home to Aldi, Target, Khol’s, Five Below, and PetSmart.

The ShopRite grocery store closed back on February 22nd.

Gong Cha Tea and Fuji Teriyaki opened in the center earlier this year.

The article states that the Orchard Center is ranked number one for customer visits within a 5-mile radius and has nearly 800,000 annual visitors.

“The purchasers know the location well, it sits off of the I-95 corridor, and is good fundamental real estate,” Vito Lupo of the KLNB retail investment sales team, told Commercial Observer. “The [previous] owners bought it in 2012, and with ShopRite leaving, they were looking to monetize the asset.”
