Rockville

Planet Fitness will be opening a new location at 5520 Randolph Rd in Rockville (Montrose Shopping Center) in the space that was formerly occupied by Gold’s Gym, according to a report by Rockville Nights. No opening date has been announced. Planet Fitness currently has MoCo locations in Germantown, Rockville, and two in Silver Spring.

In June, Planet Fitness at 255 Muddy Branch Rd in Gaithersburg  announced it would no longer be open 24 hours, seven days a week.  The gym now closes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at 9pm and reopens the following morning.  The other MoCo locations will remain 24-7 according to a representative at the Gaithersburg gym.  Also in Planet Fitness news, teenagers in MoCo can work out for free all summer at Planet Fitness through August 31st by downloading a digital key tag on PlanetFitness.com.  Any teenager to sign up for the program is automatically entered for a chance to win a $500 scholarship (one winner per state). MoCo Government

This beautification project is the first of its kind at the transfer station and is the first of several planned landscaping projects for the property.

The Transfer Station is located at 16101 Frederick Road in Derwood. The County Recycling Center is adjacent to it. Both facilities are generally open seven days a week to accept trash and items for recycling. Last year, the transfer station received more than 730,208 tons of waste and the recycling center took in more than 70,000 tons of recyclable material.


Rockville

The victim stated that on Thursday, June 2, 2022, multiple credit cards were stolen from his car while it was parked in the parking lot near OneLife Fitness, located on Research Blvd. One of the unknown suspects used the stolen credit cards and made fraudulent purchases at several stores in Virginia.

Detectives reviewed the surveillance footage of the stores and obtained photographs of the two suspects.

Rockville

On Thursday, July 7, at approximately 1:30 p.m., 6th District officers responded to the 14800 block of Physicians Lane for a carjacking that just occurred. The adult male victim was sitting in his parked silver Honda CRV when one of the suspects approached and implied that he had a weapon.

During this time, patrol officers received notification of three runaways from RICA, which is located one mile from the carjacking scene.


MoCo Police

The Montgomery County Police Department held a commemorative ceremony this morning at the Red Brick Courthouse (29 Courthouse Square, Rockville) in recognition of the Montgomery County Police Department’s 100th anniversary.  Police Chief Marcus Jones, Governor Larry Hogan, County Executive Marc Elrich, and County Council President Gabe Albornoz were among those in attendance.

At the event, Chief Marcus Jones revealed the contents of a time capsule buried 25 years ago, which included a Polaroid camera, patches, and a uniform. Items placed in the new time capsule included a taser, COVID-19 mask, and body worn camera.

Beyond MoCo

A Connecticut man was arrested in Rockville on July 1 on a warrant for a June 6 double-murder that occurred in Maine. David Barnett, 34, of Bristol, CT is alleged to have killed Kelzie Caron (21) and Pierre Langlois (21) at a residence in Auburn, ME. Barnett is currently being held in Montgomery County pending extradition, according to FOX5.

Barnett will be held at the Montgomery County Jail pending extradition proceedings. The Maine State Police and Auburn Police Detectives have been building this case with their interstate partners at the local, state, and federal levels in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maryland. The investigation into the murders continues and people with information regarding this case are encouraged to contact the Auburn Police Department or the Maine State Police.”


Rockville

Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 39-year-old Javier Gonzalez – Mena, suffering from a gunshot wound. Gonzalez – Mena succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The investigation by detectives determined that Gonzalez – Mena, who has no known address, was staying at the Red Roof Inn, when there was a knock at the door. Gonzalez – Mena stepped outside to speak with the two suspects, when he was shot.

This year, 34 members of the RCPD, Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation, and Montgomery County Department of Police, as well as Montgomery County Public Schools and City of Rockville staff members, were honored for their service. RCPD members were honored with the following awards:

The Distinguished Service Citation is presented to a member of a public safety organization, or a civilian, who served beyond the ordinary call of duty. It recognizes diligence, perseverance and timely judgement in the performance of a difficult task that resulted in the protection of life or property, the prevention of a major crime, or the apprehension of an armed and dangerous criminal.
