“I was walking my dog when I checked my ticket on the Lottery app,” said the rehabilitation counselor. “I literally jumped for joy.” Calling his wife as he hurried home, the 58-year-old shared the good news and his excitement was contagious. “She was very, very happy, sort of laughing and crying on the phone.”

The Montgomery County couple, along with their extended family, experienced a pre-vacation nightmare recently that involved payments gone missing. While they continue looking into the unusual situation, their Lottery surprise will do much to make them whole.


MDLottery

A  $25,000 winning Pick 5 ticket, purchased for 50-cents, was sold at the 7-Eleven at 13401 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. According to the Maryland Lottery, the winning numbers on August 9 were 77770 and delivered 20 winning tickets, each worth over $10,000 or more, including the ticket previously mentioned. When the Maryland Lottery’s evening Pick 5 drawing came up 77770 on Aug. 9, the result was an unusual number of big winners. A total of five $1 straight tickets each won $50,000, and five 50-cent straight tickets each won $25,000. Meanwhile, there were 10 5-Way Box tickets with $1 wagers that each won $10,000.


Silver Spring

The International Food & Craft Festival takes place today,  August 14, from 1-7pm at Veterans Plaza (One Veterans Place) in Silver Spring. The event will feature arts & crafts, food vendors, performances, music and entertainment. The event is run by Chic Events DC, who produce multiple arts and crafts events, fashion shows, arts exhibitions and more in the Washington DC metro area.

Restaurants

Miss Toya’s Creole House is now open at 923 Ellsworth Dr in Silver Spring. Menu items include Catfish & Grits, Garlic Butter Clams, Gumbo, Jambalaya, Oysters, Rib Eye, and Seafood Po Boy.  According to a post on the restaurant’s Instagram page, “Downtown Silver Spring, are you ready for the heat? Miss Toyas Creole House is finally open. It’s time for some great southern creole food, incredible drinks, friendly vibes, and a good time. Who’s ready? Miss Toyas is finally here. Let’s eat.”

Back in July we reported that Miss Toya’s Southern Kitchen will be taking over the space recently occupied by BGR at 229 Boardwalk in Rio. We’re told the Rio location will be a fast-casual restaurant, while Miss Toya’s Creole Kitchen in Downtown Silver Spring is full-service (wait staff, etc.).


Silver Spring

Imani Trenice Williams was last seen on Monday, August 8, 2022, in the 13100 block of Collingwood Terr. in Silver Spring.

Williams is approximately 5-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 135 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair with burgundy highlights, styled in braids with charms. She also wears black glasses. It is unknown what she was last seen wearing. She may be carrying a multi-colored backpack and a teal rolling backpack.


Silver Spring

The TESS Community Action Center is a walk-in DHHS office where residents are connected with County services and non-profit programs and resources.  Services provided include rental assistance, childcare assistance, financial benefit programs such as SNAP and Medicaid, VITA free tax assistance and legal services.

TESS provides a “one-stop-shop” where staff can help residents navigate a complex system of available services and programs. TESS was the first County office to provide services in Spanish and Vietnamese.  Currently, TESS staff speak English, Spanish, Amharic, and Farsi.


Silver Spring

At approximately 1:04 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the Exxon Gas Station in the 9300 block of Georgia Ave. for the report of an armed robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that the unknown suspect entered the store and asked about buying cigarettes. The suspect then pointed a black handgun at the victim and demanded cash. When the victim opened the register, the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and left the store.


Gaithersburg

Those numbers turned out to be lucky. But he didn’t find out how lucky until he checked the ticket the next day. The father of three called his wife and told her, adding that she was so happy she started crying. He even sent her a video of the Lottery terminal message that was displayed when he scanned the ticket, indicating that it was a big winner. “JR Munoz” said he and his family are now getting ready to move into their forever home.

The Powerball jackpot rolled to an annuity value of $206.9 million before being hit in the Aug. 3 drawing on a ticket sold in Pennsylvania.

The book drop will remain open for returns while the building is closed. During the closure, Long Branch Library users are encouraged to use other MCPL branches for checking out books and other materials, and using the catalog and internet computers. Nearby branches are the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee in Silver Spring, Wheaton and White Oak libraries.
