Montgomery County Native Sofia Harrison will be playing in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the Philippines in the semifinal against South Korea on Thursday, February 3rd.

The Philippine women’s football team on Monday booked a ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating Chinese Taipei in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinal round of the Women’s Asian Cup in India to make it to the semifinals and qualify for the World Cup. No Philippine football team, men or women, has ever qualified for the World Cup until now.

Harrison was born in Montgomery County, but raised in neighboring Howard County (Columbia) where she attended Atholton High School. She lettered four times in soccer and twice in basketball at Atholton High School. She earned first team all-state honors as a senior in 2016 and was a four-time All-Howard County selection before moving on to Slipper Rock University where she was a consistent starter for all four years.

Harrison has been a starter for the Philippines during this year’s Asian Cup and has played at least 90 minutes in every game except for a 6-0 blowout win over Indonesia, when the team rested many players.

Sofia Harrison leads the Philippines against South Korea at 3am on February 3rd. The game can be seen on Paramount +.
