MoCo Resident Ashwani Jain Running for Maryland Governor

MoCo resident Ashwani Jain running for Maryland governor

Jain entered the race for the Democratic nomination yesterday, joining fellow MoCo resident Peter Franchot as the only two declared candidates for governor. In a tweet declaring his candidacy, Jain wrote, “In my 31 years – I’ve beaten cancer;  gone from a Title 1 Elementary School to earning 2 bachelor’s/1 master’s; worked in the public, private & non-profit; served in the Obama/Biden White House & now run for MD Governor.”

On his website, Jain says he is running for governor for two main reasons: to make Maryland’s government more “representative, transparent and accountable” and to focus on his “Relief, Recovery and Reform” agenda. Jain includes links to policy plans for issues such as climate, education, agriculture, and LGBTQ+, women’s, and disability rights.

Jain has never held elected office. He ran for one of four at-large seats on the Montgomery County Council in 2018, finishing eighth out of 33 candidates in the Democratic primary.

More MoCo residents may enter the race for governor. Tom Perez, a former Democratic National Committee chair, Secretary of Labor, and MoCo Council member, is considering a candidacy, as is John King, a former Secretary of Education.

According to The Washington Post, former congressman John Delaney and current congressman David Trone—whose district reaches into Montgomery County—are also potential candidates for governor.
