Two Hyattsville Men Charged With Kidnapping and Assault

Gaithersburg, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division has arrested and charged two Hyattsville men with kidnapping.

Both men, 22-year-old Javier Antonio Ortiz, and 22-year-old Edwin Manuel Reyes, are accused of kidnapping and assaulting an adult female on February 5, 2022.

The victim, who is familiar with the suspects, alleges that she was approached by the suspects at the Unplugged Restaurant and Sports Bar, located on Georgia Avenue in Wheaton.

Reyes and Ortiz convinced the victim to leave the location with them. Once in the car, the victim was beaten and threatened with a handgun when she tried to exit the vehicle.

Reyes and Ortiz drove away from the location with the victim. Before losing consciousness, the victim was pulled from the vehicle, where the suspects allegedly continued to beat her. She awoke on the side of the road in the 2600 block of Powder Mill Road, in Prince George’s County.

During the course of the investigation, detectives were able to identify Reyes and Ortiz as the suspects involved in the kidnapping and assault. Both men were arrested on February 16 and interviewed by detectives.

Javier Ortiz was transported to the Central Processing Unit, and on the strength of an arrest warrant, has been charged with kidnapping and second-degree assault.

Edwin Reyes has been charged with kidnapping, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, illegal possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm in the use of a felony or violent crime. He is currently hospitalized for an injury unrelated to his apprehension.
