Beyond MoCo: McDowell’s Pop-Up, of Coming to America Fame, is Coming to Northern Virginia

“Look… me and the McDonald’s people got this little misunderstanding. See, they’re McDonald’s… I’m McDowell’s. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds.”

That’s the famous line delivered by John Amos’ character Cleo McDowell in the 1988 Eddie Murphy hit movie Coming to America.

Customers will soon be able to order Big Micks and more, as the fictional restaurant is coming Springfield, VA, according to a report from Washingtonian Magazine.

McDowell’s will be a multi-room installation that includes not simply the restaurant’s order counter (which serves actual Big Micks), but also re-creations of the dingy apartment where Prince Akeem lives, and Mr. McDowell’s office (guests can sit at his desk, don his blue blazer, and pick up the cheeseburger phone).

Tickets are available here and required to visit between May 19 – June 5 2022 at Springfield Town Center in Springfield, VA, Lower Level, Grand Court.

Per JMCPopUps, who also had a Moe’s pop-up (from The Simpsons) in the same location last year:

“Fan made parody of everyone’s favorite fast food chain. We have the Golden Arcs! Grab a Big Mick, Chicken Chunks, or a Kid’s Mildly Amusing meal and then enjoy the photo ops and fun!”
