Montgomery Parks Announces August Events Across MoCo

Montgomery Parks has announced its August lineup of special events, including Salsa in the Park and this year’s Parks Playhouse/Parks Playhouse Junior series. Summer’s almost halfway over, but there’s still so much fun to be had at Montgomery Parks! August Events at Montgomery Parks Include:

Salsa in the Park | August 4 | Wheaton Local Forest Park

Join us on Thursday, August 4, at Wheaton Local Forest Park, for a fun night of dancing and music. The event begins at 5 p.m. with salsa dancing instruction provided by Yoii Moore of Salsa with Silvia. Musical guest, La Colombopercutiva, serenades dancers from 6 to 8 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from Charlie’s Empanadas, Churros, Inc., Clayboys Shave Ice, and True Respite Brewing Co. The Latin American Youth Center will be on hand to provide information to the community. This event will feature an ASL interpreter for dance instruction from 5 to 6 p.m. Free

Kingsley Schoolhouse Tour | August 7 | Little Bennett Regional Park

The 1893 Kingsley Schoolhouse is a historical gem and one of the best remaining examples of a one-room schoolhouse in Montgomery County. Tours are offered the first Sunday of the month through October from 1 to 4 p.m. Free

Parks Playhouse Junior | August 11, 13, and 16 | Various locations

The popular Parks Playhouse Junior series ends in August with a slate of performances kids will love:

All performances are from 10 to 11 a.m. and are intended for ages three and up. Free

Oakley Cabin Open House and Guided Tours | August 13 and 27 | Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park

Visit Oakley Cabin and learn about the African American roadside community that grew at this historic site after emancipation and well into the 20th century. The cabin was inhabited until 1976 and is now a living history museum. The culture and traditions of this community influenced those in the surrounding areas and their story is deeply woven into Montgomery County’s history.

Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park offers an open house and guided tours from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturday through October. The outdoor areas of the park are open year-round, from sunrise to sunset.Free

Parks Playhouse | August 19 | Cabin John Regional Park

Parks Playhouse ends its successful season with a comedy show:

  • Friday, August 19, 6 to 9 p.m., Cabin John Regional Park will host Seltzer: A Sober Comedy Hour. Enjoy mocktails and laughs with a lineup of comedians, hosted by D.C.-based comedian, filmmaker and writer Jenny Cavallero. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase from Hardy’s BBQ and Sobar. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Free

August is the last full month to enjoy Montgomery Parks’ summer water amenities!
