The investigation by detectives has revealed that a 70-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man were crossing School Drive northbound towards Fields Road Elementary School when they were struck by a 2007 Toyota Prius, traveling westbound. Both pedestrians were transported to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead. The decedents have been identified as 70-year-old, Ana Margarita Ortiz and 65-year-old, Miguel Antonio Ortiz, of Gaithersburg. The driver of the Prius remained on scene. This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at (240)773-6620.

Per MCDOT:

Beginning Monday, Nov. 14, the bus stop located Westbound on Philadelphia Avenue (bus stop #24859), near Ceder Avenue at the Takoma Park Community Center, will be temporarily closed for approximately one year for the Takoma Park Maryland Library reconstruction project. Riders will be directed to the next nearest stops at Maple Avenue and Philadelphia Avenue (F4 Metro bus) and Maple Avenue and Grant Avenue (17 Ride On bus).

Fairland and Briggs Chaney Placemaking Festival Recap

The Montgomery County Planning Department and Dallas-based nonprofit Better Block Foundation worked with the Fairland and Briggs Chaney to bring to life the goals of the Fairland and Briggs Chaney Master Plan. The Fairland and Briggs Chaney Placemaking festival temporarily reimagined the Briggs Chaney Park and Ride on October 21 and 22, 2022 (video recap below).

The effort brought together residents, visitors, local business owners, and representatives of civic associations to make the space a vibrant place for the community to gather. Community members worked with the Better Block team through the summer and fall to build, paint, and construct their ideas and bring them to life. The transformed outdoor space hosted food and retail vendors, Montgomery Parks’ activities and features, and a welcoming place for residents to gather with their family, neighbors and friends during the public celebration.

One Person Dead and Several Injured After Early Morning Shooting

Update: MCPD released the following information, “On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at approximately 4 a.m., officers responded to the area of Colony Road and Northampton Drive for the report of shots fired. Officers arrived on scene and located a deceased person, with trauma to the body, to the rear area of the 100 block of Colony Road. This is an active and ongoing investigation. A formal news release will be distributed as more information becomes available. The decedent’s names will be released following proper notification of next of kin.

7am Update: Montgomery County Police are currently on the scene investigating a shooting that occurred around 4am on Wednesday, November 9. According to MCFRS Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the incident occurred in the area of Colony Rd and Northampton Dr in Silver Spring. Multiple patients have been treated by EMS and FOX5 reports that one person is dead as a result of the shooting. We will post an update when more information becomes available.

Maryland Votes to Legalize Recreational Marijuana Use, According to a Projection by the Associated Press

Maryland voted to legalized recreational marijuana use Tuesday night, according to a projection by The Associated Press. The question was “Do you favor the legalization of the use of cannabis by an individual who is at least 21 years of age on or after July 1, 2023, in the State of Maryland?” According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, as of 9:35pm there were 481,436 votes (64.94%) for the constitutional amendment and 259,931 votes (35.06%) against it.

Additional explanation, courtesy of BallotPedia: The measure would amend the Maryland Constitution to add a new article, Article XX, which would authorize individuals 21 years of age or older to use and possess marijuana. The added section also authorizes the Maryland General Assembly to “provide for the use, distribution, possession, regulation, and taxation of cannabis within the state.” During the 2022 legislative session, the state legislature also passed the implementing legislation (HB 837) that would take effect once the amendment is adopted. Currently, marijuana is legal for medicinal use in Maryland under a 2013 law. In April 2014, possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana was decriminalized.

Governor Larry Hogan Congratulates Wes Moore on Being Elected Maryland’s Next Governor

Current Maryland Governor Larry Hogan took to social media to inform constituents that he has spoken with Governor Elect Wes Moore and congratulated him on being elected as Maryland’s next Governor, saying “There is no higher calling than public service, and no greater honor than to serve the people of this great state.”

The Associated Press called the race for Maryland Governor earlier on Tuesday night, naming Democrat Wes Moore the next Governor of Maryland. Moore defeated Republican Dan Cox and will be the first Black Governor in Maryland history. Hogan added “Our team is committed to ensuring a smooth and orderly transition to the next administration, and I look forward to meeting with the governor-elect in the coming days.”
