Family Mourns Loss of Melanie Diaz– The Woman Killed in Silver Spring Apartment Fire on Saturday

25-year-old Melanie Diaz was killed in Saturday’s fire at The Arrive apartment building in Silver Spring. She was found unresponsive in the seventh floor stairway, along with her two dogs, when attempting to evacuate the building from her eleventh-story apartment. Her family described her as someone who “filled everyone’s life with happiness.”

Diaz was a 2021 graduate of Georgetown University who began her career in DC following college and lived at the Silver Spring apartment building. Her family has traveled from Florida and a GoFundMe was started on their behalf to help with funeral expenses and support for them as they will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time:

“On behalf of the Diaz family, we ask for your support as they navigate every parent’s worst nightmare. Cesar and Zuleika lost their daughter Melanie yesterday in a tragic accident.
Melanie was a ray of sunshine in everyone’s life. She was a 2021 graduate of Georgetown University. After graduation, she began her career in DC and established her residence in Maryland.
Donations will go towards funeral arrangements, as well as travel expenses since they have had to travel from Florida to Maryland. Donations will also help support them as they will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time.
No amount is too small. Any amount will be greatly appreciated.
God Bless”
