The Washington Commanders released an official statement from head coach Ron Rivera stating that the team has fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer.
“Today I relieved Jack Del Rio and Brent Vieselmeyer of their duties. I appreciate all that they contributed to the organization over the past four seasons and wish them all the best moving forward.” Commanders owner Josh Harris also released a statement on the moves and the future of the team.
The Commanders are coming off of a Thanksgiving day blowout loss to the rival Dallas Cowboys, 45-10. The Commanders are now 4-8 after a 2-0 start and have a very difficult stretch coming up that nearly guarantees a losing season.
Rivera has been the odds in favorite to be the next NFL head coach to be fired, according to various betting websites. Prior to the Cowboys loss, the Commanders became one of seven NFL teams with at least a 1% chance at “earning” the number 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. ESPN sports analytics writer Seth Walder included Washington, which had a 1.1% chance at the number 1 pick in the next NFL draft, as tied for 6th with the Tennessee Titans at a shot at the top pick. With the loss to the Cowboys, their chances slightly increased and the team could see even greater odds at the first pick if teams ahead of them win this weekend.
