Washington Commanders Hold the #2 Pick in the 2024 NFL Draft Heading Into Week 17

Following a home loss to the San Francisco 49ers and a win by the Arizona Cardinals over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Commanders now hold the #2 pick in the NFL Draft…barely.

According to Tankathon.com, the Commanders leapfrogged the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals at of 4pm on Sunday, 12/31. Even though the Commanders have identical records to the Cardinals and Patriots and have beaten both this season, NFL Draft order is determined by Strength of Schedule (SOS) as the first tie-breaker. Tiebreakers: strength of schedule, division tiebreakers, conference tiebreakers, interconference tiebreakers, coin toss

Right now, Washington’s SOS is .515 compared to New England’s .518. If Washington loses its last game against the Dallas Cowboys and the Patriots beat the Jets, then Washington will have the #2 pick. If both teams lose, the chances of remaining in the #2 spot remain high, but will rely on the adjusted SOS, which in turn relies on the results of several games around the league. The Bears (via the Panthers) have clinched the #1 pick. Below you’ll see the Top 10 pics, per Tankathon, going into the week 17 games.
