Gaithersburg Seeks Volunteers for City’s “Fix-It Fair” This Spring

The Environmental Affairs Committee is planning a Fix-It Fair on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Casey Community Center. Residents are invited to make an appointment to bring in personal items, such as toasters, bicycles or jewelry, for free repair.

The “right to repair” and the ability to fix material is crucial to transitioning away from a disposal society. Fixers are key to saving useful materials from landfills. The City is seeking volunteer “fixers” with experience in:

  • Small Appliances
  • Lamps
  • Jewelry
  • Textile/Clothing Repairs
  • Tool Sharpening
  • Bikes
  • Other Skills Welcomed

Volunteer fixers will be provided with basic information on each appointment up to two weeks in advance of the event. Fixers must provide the necessary equipment and tools for their area of expertise. The City will provide:

  • Basic materials/disposables as needed to perform the repairs.
  • Tables and area for repair work.
  • Opportunity to advertise fixer repair businesses at the event.
  • Coffee, beverages and a hot boxed lunch.
  • Hold harmless waiver program.
  • Certificate of Appreciation.

Event attendees will register online up to two weeks prior to the event. Bookings will be in 15-30-minute time slots. Attendees will be informed that each repair will occur during the appointed time and that a complete fix is not guaranteed at this event. The 2023 event had 41 appointments and a 99% successful diagnosis rate.

If you are interested in volunteering, email [email protected] by March 18, 2024. Please include the type of material you can repair and samples of your success. If you have any questions about the event please contact [email protected].
