Defending State Champion Damascus Hornets defeat Sherwood (Softball)

In a display of sheer dominance and unwavering determination, the Damascus Hornets reaffirmed their status as defending state champions with a commanding 10-2 victory over the Sherwood Varsity Warriors in a thrilling showdown at Damascus High School. Led by the masterful pitching of Alyssa Clark and a relentless offensive assault, the Hornets left no doubt that they are a force to be reckoned with on the softball diamond. Yesterday’s scores from across the county can be seen here.

From the outset, it was evident that Damascus meant business. Despite an early deficit, the Hornets wasted no time in mounting a ferocious comeback, fueled by a relentless barrage of hits and runs that left their opponents reeling. Kailyn Sheahin, Alyssa Clark, Allie Doyle, and Amaya Hammond spearheaded the offensive onslaught, each delivering clutch hits that propelled Damascus into the lead and set the tone for the rest of the game.

But it was the pitching prowess of Alyssa Clark that truly stole the show. The standout hurler showcased her dominance from the first pitch to the last, striking out an impressive 12 batters over seven innings of work. Clark’s command of the strike zone and ability to keep opposing hitters off balance proved to be the difference-maker, as she surrendered just four hits and two runs while walking four. Her performance was a testament to her skill and determination, cementing her status as one of the premier pitchers in the state.

On the offensive side of the ball, Damascus’ lineup was firing on all cylinders. With a relentless attack that kept the Sherwood defense on its heels, the Hornets amassed an impressive 13 hits on the day. Hammond led the charge with a standout performance at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats. Sheahin, Doyle, and Clark each drove in two runs apiece, showcasing their ability to deliver in clutch situations. Julia Alexander, Josie Hoffacker, and Falyn Quick also contributed to the offensive barrage, collecting multiple hits to keep the pressure on Sherwood’s pitching staff.

Despite facing a formidable opponent in the Sherwood Varsity Warriors, Damascus remained undaunted, relying on their collective talent and unwavering resolve to secure yet another statement victory. And while Sherwood showed flashes of brilliance, including a rare triple play turned in the game, it was ultimately not enough to stem the tide of Damascus’ relentless onslaught.

As the final out was recorded and the scoreboard illuminated in their favor, the Damascus Hornets celebrated yet another triumph in their storied softball journey. With their sights set on another state championship, the Hornets stand poised to continue their reign atop the softball landscape, leaving opponents in their wake and etching their names into the annals of high school softball greatness.
