Christian McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards last year for the San Francisco 49ers. His younger brother, Luke McCaffrey, was drafted by the Washington Commanders as a wide receiver in the 3rd round of the 2024 NFL Draft and today he took a couple mini camp reps at running back.
Luke is a former quarterback who started a few games at Nebraska before transferring to Rice and finishing his college football career at wide receiver. Last season, he finished the season as the Owls’ leading receiver with 58 receptions for 723 yards and six touchdowns despite missing the final three games of the regular season due to an ankle injury and also rushed for 147 yards and one touchdown.
While McCaffrey is likely to play most of his snaps at wide receiver for the Commanders, on Thursday morning he took a few handoffs in practice, as shown in the tweet below by Mitch Tischler. Luke isn’t a stranger to running the ball, as he has rushed for over 100 yards in every college football season he played in at both Nebraska and Rice, finishing with almost 1,000 career NCAA rushing yards.
It will be interesting to see how McCaffrey is used Moby the Commanders’ new coaching staff in the NFL, but he has proven to have the ability to hurt defenses in many different ways.
