Swiftwater Rescue For Several Distressed Swimmers in the Potomac River

Multiple Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) units, along with a USPark helicopter, have responded to a call for several distressed swimmers in the Potomac river in the area of Sherwin Island.

According to MCFRS chief spokesperson Pete Piringer, swiftwater rescue boats are in the water searching for “several distressed swimmers.”

In an update, Piringer stated that the distressed swimmers were contacted and are now “OK” on the shoreline. Swiftwater boat crews then located additional swimmers nearby. Swimming is prohibited in the area, with currents deemed dangerous. MCFRS reminds residents that swimming/wading in the Potomac river is illegal.
