MCPS will join Baltimore City Public Schools and Washington County Public Schools as school districts that will pilot girls’ flag football during the Fall 2024 season, joining Frederick County Public Schools, which successfully piloted girls’ flag last year. The schedule and information about how the season will work, can be seen below:
Girls’ flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, gaining popularity across the country and being added as an Olympic sport for the 2028 games in Los Angeles. Girls’ flag football will provide additional participation opportunities for our female student-athletes, while bringing a new sport and experience to MCPS Athletics. The partnership will provide grant funding for the pilot program, including equipment and Under Armour uniforms for each of the 25 MCPS high schools. Grant funding will also be provided to cover other expenses, including coaching stipends, transportation, and awards.
All 25 high schools will play at least eight games. The schools will be split into four divisions with names designed to honor the groundbreaking moment. Teams are assigned based on geography and traditional rivalries. Each division winner will receive a trophy and advance to the county playoffs. The Divisions can be seen below:

Teams will play other divisions in weeks 1-3:
- Week 1: Trailblazers vs. Innovators, Dreamers vs. Pioneers.
- Week 2: Trailblazers vs. Dreamers, Innovators vs. Pioneers
- Week 3: Dreamers vs. Innovators, Trailblazers vs. Pioneers
