MCPS Plans to Install Vape Detectors in Every High School

At today’s Board of Education meeting, the authorization will be requested to receive and expend, subject to County Council approval, a Fiscal Year 2025 supplemental appropriation of $2,000,000 for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to install vape detectors at each high school.

Per a memo from MCPS superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, “As a result of ongoing serious incidents within MCPS and throughout the nation, it is imperative
to enhance safety and security in all schools and seek opportunities to address areas for improvement that can increase efficiency, reinforce policies, mitigate hazards, and reduce risks.

MCPS received funding through a JUUL settlement that will support the purchase of a vape detection system to ensure a healthier and safer school environment for students and staff.

The funds will be used to purchase and install a vape detection system in all high schools in areas
such as restrooms to mitigate the health risks associated with vaping and ensure that all students
feel safe in their school environments.”
