As we hit the midpoint of the inaugural eight-game season for MCPS, it’s clear we’re moving from the experimentation of non-conference play into the meat of divisional rivalries. Some teams have risen above the fray while others still search for their footing, with several squads poised to take control of their divisions in the coming weeks.
Trailblazers Division: Knights Flexing Early Muscle Standings: 1. Wheaton 4-0 (1-0) 2. Einstein 3-2 (2-0) 3. Kennedy 2-2 (1-0) 4. RM 2-2 (1-1) 5. Rockville 1-4 (1-1) 6. Blair 0-4 (0-2) 7. Northwood 0-4 (0-2)
At first glance, Einstein’s 3-2 record may seem impressive, but a deeper look suggests that the Titans’ position at the top of the standings could be misleading. Their losses to Clarksburg and narrow victory over a winless BCC team have raised questions about their true potential. On the other hand, Wheaton’s undefeated start, including a gritty one-score win over a strong Whitman squad, has positioned them as the clear front-runners in the Trailblazers division. Wheaton looks like the team to beat, led by a balanced attack that has delivered consistent performances in both tight contests and blowouts. Meanwhile, Kennedy and RM are hanging tough in the middle of the pack, but both face stiff challenges ahead if they hope to climb higher.
Innovators Division: Sherwood Standing Alone Standings: 1. Sherwood 3-1 (1-0) 2. Blake 1-3 (1-0) 3. Magruder 1-3 (1-0) 4. Paint Branch 2-2 (0-1) 5. Gaithersburg 1-3 (0-1) 6. Springbrook 1-3 (0-1)
If there’s one division still looking for a true contender, it’s the Innovators. Sherwood has risen to the top with a solid 3-1 start, their only blemish a comprehensive loss to powerhouse Damascus. Yet, they’ve taken care of business elsewhere, and that consistency may be enough in a division where every other team is still struggling to find an identity. Blake and Magruder, both winless outside of divisional play, secured their first victories against lesser opposition, raising doubts about whether either can truly challenge Sherwood. Paint Branch’s 2-2 record is deceiving—both wins came against winless teams (Blair and BCC), and they were blown out 31-6 by Magruder. For now, Sherwood appears to have the inside track in a division still looking for someone to step up.
Dreamers Division: A Four-Way Battle Brewing Standings: 1. Walter Johnson 3-1 (1-0) 2. Quince Orchard 3-1 (1-0) 3. Whitman 3-1 (1-0) 4. Wootton 3-1 (0-1) 5. Churchill 1-3 (0-1) 6. BCC 0-4 (0-1)
The Dreamers division is shaping up to be the most unpredictable in the league, with four teams boasting identical 3-1 records. Walter Johnson, Quince Orchard, Whitman, and Wootton all have solid résumés, but it remains unclear which team will emerge as the true leader. Walter Johnson’s overtime loss to Poolesville in non-conference play is the only blemish on their record, while Quince Orchard’s narrow loss to unbeaten Northwest signals they are a legitimate contender. Whitman, despite their lone loss to Wheaton, is also in the mix, having taken care of business against Churchill. Wootton’s Week 1 win over Clarksburg was impressive, but their recent divisional loss to WJ exposes some vulnerability. This division will likely come down to the wire, with each team needing to bring their best as divisional play intensifies.
Pioneers Division: Damascus Dominance Standings: 1. Damascus 4-0 (1-0) 2. Northwest 4-0 (1-0) 3. Clarksburg 3-1 (1-0) 4. Poolesville 3-1 (0-1) 5. Seneca Valley 3-1 (0-1) 6. Watkins Mill 0-4 (0-1)
If the Trailblazers and Innovators divisions have yet to reveal a clear-cut powerhouse, the Pioneers are the opposite. Damascus stands head and shoulders above the competition, boasting an undefeated record without having allowed a single point all season. Their 3+ score victories in every game have cemented them as the team to beat, and next week’s showdown with fellow unbeaten Northwest could very well determine who will sit atop this division by season’s end. Northwest, for their part, has been equally impressive in their 4-0 start, with a marquee victory over Quince Orchard in Week 1. Clarksburg, meanwhile, continues to build momentum, bouncing back from a Week 1 loss to Wootton with a dominant 27-7 win over Poolesville. Speaking of Poolesville, they’ve impressed outside of their divisional loss to Clarksburg, including a solid win over WJ. Seneca Valley rounds out this formidable division, with all three of their wins coming by comfortable margins before they ran into the Damascus buzzsaw.
The Road Ahead With divisional play now in full swing, every game becomes more critical as teams jockey for position. While the Pioneers division has two clear powerhouses in Damascus and Northwest, the Dreamers and Trailblazers divisions are far more up for grabs. Sherwood may look comfortable atop the Innovators, but they’ll need to fend off potential challengers in Blake and Magruder. As we move deeper into the season, expect more surprises, upsets, and statement games that will help separate the pretenders from the true contenders. For now, all eyes will be on next Wednesday’s Damascus-Northwest clash, a showdown that could define the season moving forward.
