For Reader’s Digest’s eight ‘Nicest Places in America’ annual contest, the magazine started by asking readers to be “scouts around the country and send us your nominations for the nicest places you know.” The magazine’s editorial team vets each place carefully, whittling down the list with the help of its panel of judges (including the Today’s Show Al Roker) “who know a thing or two about niceness themselves.” This year, the list included one place in Maryland.
Though Provo, Utah was named the Nicest, our very own Silver Spring, MD made the list that included Butte, MT, Brooklyn, NY, Cashiers, NC, and Horseshoe Beach, FL. The areas were highlighted on the Today Show and Christine Romans of NBC News agreed that Silver Spring is a nice area, stating she spent time in the area when she was growing up because her grandparents lived there.
Silver Spring is continuing its hot run in 2024, also being named the “Best Place to Live for Families” in Fortune’s third annual list showcasing the cities and towns across America that best support the unique needs of multigenerational families. Per Fortune, “The Washington, D.C., suburb offers local charm with the convenience of city life, just six miles away from the nation’s capital—a quick commute via the Washington Metro or MARC train.”
GoFundMe, the world’s largest fundraising platform, also announced earlier this year that Silver Spring, MD was the third most generous city for supporting individuals, causes, and organizations. Per GoFundMe: “Last year, Silver Spring residents supported a number of causes within and beyond their communities, including fundraisers for families, sports teams and local businesses.”
