NBC4 Releases 2024-2025 Winter Weather Outlook

As we approach the winter months, many are wondering what kind of weather to expect in the coming season. We have already broken down meteorologist Mike Thomas and FOX 5’s Winter Outlook and now Doug Kammerer and NBC 4’s Storm Team has released their Winter Outlook for us to look at.

Kammerer says that the last time we experienced widespread heavy snowfall was in 2016, leading to speculation that we might be due for another significant storm. However, current forecasts suggest otherwise, as Kammerer indicates that a major snowstorm is not likely this year.

This winter, we find ourselves in a weak La Niña phase, which typically correlates with below-average snowfall across many regions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) previosuly released its winter outlook, predicting a warmer-than-average winter, a sentiment that aligns with Kammerer’s assessment.

What does this mean for winter weather enthusiasts? Expect an active storm track this season, characterized by frequent weather system movements. These systems will likely bring a mix of rain and snow, with transitions between the two depending heavily on temperature fluctuations and the timing of each storm. While these events are not expected to be high-impact, they could still provide some wintry weather.

Overall, we can anticipate a winter that is warmer than usual, punctuated by occasional colder periods. The best chances for significant snowfall will likely occur in December and February, according to Storm Team 4.

In terms of snowfall amounts, projections suggest that most areas in Montgomery County can expect 13 to 20 inches of snow (with southern parts in the 6-13” category) while the northern regions (Frederick and Washington counties) may see between 20 and 28 inches. However, if we manage to shift from a weak La Niña phase to a neutral pattern, there is potential for increased snowfall, which is something meteorologists will be monitoring closely as the season progresses.

As winter unfolds, it’s essential to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and prepare accordingly. While this season may not bring the monster snowfalls of years past, there are still opportunities for winter weather enjoyment ahead.
