Following the recognition of social studies resource teacher Ken Buffum’s innovative teaching methods, Topps took an exciting step to further engage the students of Damascus High School. In a heartwarming gesture, the trading card company sent several packs of sports cards to Buffum’s class, allowing the students to experience firsthand the thrill of opening packs and the excitement surrounding collectible cards.
Last month we let you know how Buffum creatively integrated Jayden Daniels’ rookie cards into his economics curriculum, using them as a dynamic tool to illustrate the principles of supply and demand. The trading card company Topps recognized this engaging approach, highlighting the intersection of education and the enthusiasm surrounding collectible cards in a social media post. After seeing our article, the company decided to send Buffum a few packs of cards for the students to open.
In a note to Buffum, Topps wrote, “Hi Ken! Thank you for allowing us to tell the story of your awesome class. Hope you enjoy ripping these packs with your students! We appreciate you being an amazing member of the hobby! Sincerely, Your friends at Topps.”
Buffum told us he had his students open the packs today. Staff Development teacher Nicole Moravy joined the students to “rip” some packs with photographs taken by Damascus principal Bradley Rohner. Buffum said, “We didn’t pull anything crazy, but one student pulled a Brandom Nimmo relic cards which contains part of a bat he used in a game. Pretty cool!” A few photos can be seen below.
