Beyond MoCo

Maryland’s First (And Only) Cook Out Opened 10 Years Ago

The first Cook Out restaurant opened in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1989. Following its success, over 50 additional locations were established throughout North Carolina before the brand began its expansion beyond state borders. Now. There are over 300 restaurants across ten states, including one in Maryland.

In the summer of 2014, Salisbury (1115 South Salisbury Blvd.) was introduced to Cook Out. The fast-food chain is known for offering a wide variety of inexpensive menu options for its customers. Along with its quick service and late closing time, it is an ideal fit for its location in a college town.

Their menu primarily features grilled hamburgers and cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, North Carolina barbecue and quesadillas. A signature item found on the menu is the Cook Out Tray, which features combinations of entrees, sides and a drink for a low price. Another feature of Cook Out’s menu is their selection of more than 40 flavors of milkshake. A featured drink on their menu is Cheerwine, a local North Carolina cherry soda usually only served in North Carolina and surrounding states, that is now also offered in many grocery stores in Maryland.

Two years ago, in November 2022, the fast food chain came one step closer to our area with a new location opening at 8502 Centreville Road in Manassas Park.this was the first Cook Out in the DC Metro area, taking over the space that was formerly home to Roy Rogers.

Im 2020, prior to the Manassas Park opening, the MoCoShow made the 60 mile trek down to Fredericksburg, VA to visit what was then the area’s closest Cook Out location. We left Gaithersburg, located in the approximate center of MoCo, at 6:14pm and arrived an hour and twenty minutes later, at 7:34pm.
