“Clone Oak Tree” Planted at Lone Oak Brewery

The Lone Oak tree, a historic white oak that stood as a symbol of both the resilience and division of American history, has found new life at Lone Oak Farm Brewery in Olney. After the original tree, which the farm brewery is named for, fell in a powerful spring storm in 2023. Its legacy continues, both in spirit and in physical form, through a cloned version that has been planted on the property.

The original Lone Oak tree held deep historical significance. The tree had been standing long before the Civil War, acting as a boundary between two neighboring properties. What made this oak especially poignant was the division between the two families that owned the adjacent lands. One side supported the Union, while the other fought for the Confederacy, marking the tree as a silent witness to the nation’s fractured past. For generations, the Lone Oak had stood as a testament to both local history and the broader struggles of the Civil War era. Its fallen boughs, however, would not signal the end of its role in the community’s story.

In 2023, the inevitable happened—the century-old Lone Oak succumbed to high winds, leaving only the base of the tree on the property. But for Chris Miller, co-owner of Lone Oak Brewery and a certified arborist, this loss was not the end. Miller took it upon himself to ensure that its legacy would live on. Despite the storm’s destructive force, the fallen tree had viable buds and cambium (the layer of tissue responsible for growth). Miller, seizing the opportunity, carefully harvested cuttings from the tree’s canopy. These cuttings were grafted onto rootstock, beginning the delicate process of cloning the mighty oak.

The cloned Lone Oak was planted on the grounds of the Lone Oak Brewery, where the hope is that it will grow as a living tribute to the original tree. The timing was significant—its planting coincided with the grand opening of the Fallen Oak Distillery, a new venture by the same team behind the brewery. The distillery’s name, Fallen Oak, was chosen to honor the tree and its historical connection to the land. Just as the Lone Oak had weathered storms for over a century, the distillery now represents a fresh start, symbolized by the cloned tree taking root and growing anew. The “Clone Oak,” as it’s being called, is more than just a sapling—it’s a living reminder of the past, its historical weight carried forward into the future.
