The RFK bill, which would allow DC to take control of federal land (the site of RFK stadium) has successfully passed the committee vote with a score of 17-2– marking an important, but not final milestone. The site remains in play as the Washington Commanders search for a site for their new stadium.
The most probable path for the bill’s passage is to be attached to a larger spending bill, rather than being voted on as a standalone measure. The Washington Post’s Sam Fortier reports that they have until Friday, December 20th to have this completed. The Athletic’s Ben Standig shared a statement from a Washington Commanders representative on the result:
“Today’s result is an exciting and significant step forward for the city of Washington D.C. as it looks to gain long-term control of the RFK site. The Commanders have been fortunate to have interest from three incredible jurisdictions as we search for a new home and stadium. The vote today brings us one step closer towards continuing conversations with D.C., along with Maryland and Virginia, as a potential future home for our franchise.”
