Park Police Assures Residents That Alligators Are Not Native to Maryland and Signs Appear to Be A Prank

The Maryland National Capital Park Police (Montgomery County Division) assured residents that signs posted along the Sligo Creek Trail in Takoma Park regarding alligators were not posted by county or state officials and appear to be a prank.

Park Police shared the following on X, “We have received reports of the below sign being posted along the Sligo Creek Trail in Takoma Park. The signs were not posted by us, @MontgomeryParks or @MarylandDNR, and appear to be a prank. Alligators are not native to Maryland and there have been no reported sightings.”

The sign, which was shared by Park Police and can be seen in full below, states the following: “DO NOT DISTURB THE ALLIGATORS. Our alligators are not dead or sleeping. This time of year, alligators enter “brumation”, the reptile version of hibernation. They may remain immobile for days, their metabolism slowed to the bare minimum. But don’t be fooled! They are easily startled, fast, and very dangerous! Do not feed and keep small children and pets from the water’s edge. Maryland Department of Herpetological Resources.
