Rockville Town Square Officially Rebrands: “Welcome to The Square”

The development formerly known as Rockville Town Square has shared a press release announcing a rebrand to The Square. In recent months we’ve let you know of the upcoming Trader Joe’s scheduled to open this year, the arrival of Dirty Dough, over 1,000 people attending the ‘Tree Lighting at the Square’ event, and an overall feeling of optimism as new tenants enter.

In 2022, Morguard North American Residential REIT acquired the retail portion of Rockville Town Square from Federal Realty. Having purchased Fenestra Apartments in 2017, Morguard stated that the the acquisition of the remaining retail in this mixed-use asset expands Morguard’s investment in the City of Rockville. The transaction closed at a purchase price of $33 million, excluding closing costs. More on the rebrand, per the press release:

“Rockville’s downtown hub has a new name and a fresh look: The Square. This change signals a renewed focus on making the space a vibrant, inclusive destination reflecting Rockville’s dynamic spirit.

“This is just the start of an exciting new chapter. We’re focused on creating a lively and welcoming space where people can come together, make memories, and enjoy new experiences,” said Joshua Nolan, Associate VP at Morguard Management Company, manager of The Square.

The rebranding is the first step in a series of enhancements designed to breathe new life into The Square. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to a range of exciting developments in the coming months. Among the changes are plans to attract new retailers, including the highly anticipated addition of Trader Joe’s (Spring 2025), along with other new tenants aimed at enriching the shopping, dining, and entertainment experience.

One of the most notable initiatives in the rebranding effort is a partnership with local creative and events agency, Viva Creative. This collaboration will bring the brand to life through innovative, interactive experiences, including vibrant murals by local artists showcasing Rockville’s unique flora and fauna. These artistic installations will celebrate the community’s rich culture and natural beauty, creating a sense of place that resonates with residents and visitors.

“The Square is a central part of Rockville Town Center and we are thrilled to see new momentum to make it an even greater place for residents, businesses, and visitors,” said Mayor Monique Ashton. “Rockville is open for business and our City is excited that The Square is becoming a more vibrant destination where people can live with joy, dine and enjoy global bites, and work and play. From the new Rockville Town Center Masterplan, to new businesses moving in, to the new pedestrian and bike safety improvements and art, and now this refreshed initiative, The Square is a gathering place that welcomes all.”

The transformation of The Square is already underway, with residents expected to see the first wave of visual changes by May. For more information about The Square, visit thesquarerockville.com.”
