The Washington Commanders have been mentioned as a candidate to trade for several big-name players who will likely be moving on from their previous teams this offseason– with Cooper Kupp and Myles Garrett being two of the names we hear most.
Today, we’ll discuss why trading for Cooper Kupp would be a smart move for the Commanders. Before getting to that, Myles Garrett would certainly make the team better, but the price tag to trade for him will be significantly higher than what it would take to trade for Cupp.
Cooper Kupp is coming off of his third injury-plagued season in a row (he has played in 34 of the last 51 games) and will be 32 when the upcoming season starts. Even with 18 games missed in the last three season, Kupp’s numbers in each season are better than any Washington receiver not named Terry McLaurin.
We agree with what local Commanders writer George Carmi recently shared on social media regarding Kupp, “Cooper Kupp would absolutely EAT here with Jayden Daniels. Kupp still has body control, good hands, and most importantly… he’s smart as hell. He’s going to get open.” A video of Kupp clips from this past season can be seen below.
Another fan chimed in, “Cooper Kupp is what Luke McCaf fans wish he could become,” comparing Commanders rookie WR and 3rd round draft pick Luke McCaffrey to Kupp. McCaffrey finished his rookie year with 18 catches for 184 yards in limited action and, while he could step up in the future, doesn’t look ready to be the number two guy right now.
Many believe that Kupp could be had for a fourth round pick– the major difference between trading for someone like Myles Garrett (who may require multiple firsts) or Deebo Samuel– a wide receiver who is younger than Kupp, but may require a second round pick. If the Rams pay part of Kupp’s salary, a fourth round pick and a reliable, veteran talent like Kupp may elevate this offense to even greater heights.
