One of Maryland’s Most Iconic Ice Cream Shops Will Open For Its 63rd Season on March 17th

Jimmie Cone has been serving soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt in Damascus since 1962, and will open for its 63rd season in March 17. The iconic ice cream spot has an additional location in Mount Airy.

Owners Dan and Bonnie Leiter purchased Jimmie Cone in 1990 from Bill and Dorothy Harris, the son and daughter-in-law of the original owner. In 1997, they expanded their reach by opening a second location in nearby Mount Airy, which is slightly larger than the original. Both locations—26420 Ridge Road in Damascus and 1312 S Main Street in Mount Airy—serve classic flavors of chocolate, vanilla, and twist on a daily basis.

Additionally, strawberry, black raspberry, and orange flavors rotate weekly and can also be enjoyed twisted with vanilla. For those seeking alternatives, frozen yogurt options are available as well, including one fat-free and one fat- and sugar-free variety, which also change weekly.

One reason Jimmie Cone’s soft serve ice cream is beloved by many is its rich composition, made with 10 percent butterfat—nearly double the amount found in McDonald’s and Dairy Queen soft serve. On warm days, both locations are often bustling with cars, as eager patrons line up for a taste, with the queue moving relatively quickly.
