Fans Share Memories of Iconic Ocean City Boardwalk Eatery Following Its Closure After 90 Years

After more than 90 years of service in Ocean City, MD, Alaska Stand on 9th Street announced last month that it will be closing its doors. In a message to the community, the owners expressed their gratitude for the cherished memories created at the 9th Street Boardwalk location and confirmed that Thrasher’s Fries will take over the space. Fans of Alaska Stand have shared their memories, which can be found below.

The restaurant was well-known for its burgers, hot dogs, fries, funnel cakes, chocolate-covered bananas, and ice cream. While this transition marks the end of an era, the owners emphasized that the stand’s legacy will continue to be a part of Ocean City’s history. Below are some comments from social media remembering the iconic restaurant:

• I will really miss the Alaska Stand! I have been a loyal customer for over 50 years. Sorry to see something else go.

• Best burgers I am 50, had my first one when I was 8, man this is going to be a food I am going to miss. Congrats on the years of service and your future.

• Thank you for providing me and my family breakfast, lunch, and dinner for nearly 30 years while we stayed next door at the old Lankford hotel apartments. My kids grew up running up to your window with sandy feet and walking away with a cheese dog and funnel cake. You will forever be part of our childhood memories!

• It was traditionally our first stop for a cheeseburger after the drive from Pennsylvania. Windows down as the ocean air graced our senses knowing the best cheeseburger in town was to follow. As was our parting meal for lunch before we left.

• Awwww! 🙁 I love you guys! I used to stay at The Wellington and you were my go-to for lunch and snacks on the beach! You have the best beach burgers and lemonade anywhere! I will miss you! Thank you for all the memories! ❤️

• It’s wild to think I’ve been a customer for fifty years, and that’s still nowhere near as long as Alaska Stand has been open! Great run, thank you for consistently being a part of happy OC Boardwalk memories. Best wishes for you all in the future!

• OMG, for years we stayed in basement apt on boardwalk between 8th & 9th St. I would live on Ham Sandwiches made by mom and would walk up to Alaska Stand to get Large Grape soda with crushed ice everyday

• In the summer of 1984, I was a seasonal police officer in OC and lived on 8th St. After my shift, I would come home, change into civilian clothes and walk around to the Alaska Stand on 9th St. I would get two hot dogs with cheese and a soda. Mmmm.

• I worked for Casey’s Games in the 70’s, right across the boards from the Alaska Stand on Wicomico. Ate there pretty much every day before work. Missed that one when it changed and now will miss the 9th St one. Sad. 🙁

• My family rented a house on 9th street for many years. We would walk the 1/2 block and get lunch at the Alaska stand every day. My dad especially loved the hot dogs.

• Congrats on your new chapter. A visit to Alaska Stand has been part of every trip I’ve taken to Ocean City since the 80s.

• I’ve been going to OC since 1960. The Alaska Stand was always the first and last meal I had there every stay. I didn’t know August 2024 would be my last time eating the best cheeseburgers and hot dogs on planet earth. I am heartbroken. I wish your family the best! Also, where did you get your burgers/meat from?

• Say it ain’t so! It won’t be a proper trip ‘Downey oshun’ without the Alaska Stand. I’ve even got the kids and grandkids on board with the idea. Gotta have the cheese dog! Beach club and Alaska stand – 2 9th St icons! Thanks for the memories.

• Such a shame. The Alaska Stand is one of my first memories of OC. Hate to see 90 years of history gone.
You will be missed and remember fondly

• Thanks for the memories. This is the last straw for me. All the places we have been to are now gone. And now so am I. Goodbye OC.

• We spent our summer vacations at the Acorn Townhouses at 9th and Baltimore and before that at The Admiral across the street. The Alaska Stand was a staple. We loved it. You will be missed.
Thank you!
