Restaurant Signs on to Take Over Former Kat’s Kitchen and Longtime Dominic’s Italian Grille Space

Irene’s Pupusas has signed on to take over the space most recently occupied by Kat’s Kitchen and formerly home to Dominic’s Italian Grille at 18254 New Hampshire Ave. in Colesville’s Meadowood shopping center.

The restaurant honors the legacy of the late Irene Cuevas, a Honduran entrepreneur who built a local empire based on her popular pupusas. In 1982, she launched one of the area’s first pupusa trucks, equipping it with a makeshift griddle and parking it near soccer games. Today, Irene’s Pupusas has additional locations at 812 Russell Ave. in Gaithersburg, 12391 Georgia Ave. in Glenmont, and in Hyattsville (Prince George’s County).

In addition to the signature pupusas, the restaurant menus feature a blend of Salvadoran and Honduran dishes alongside other Latin favorites. The offerings include baleadas, fajitas, tamales, soups, tacos, yuca con chicharrón, and more. An opening date for the restaurant is not yet available, but a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcoholic Beverage Services (ABS) is set for May 15th.
