Montgomery County Man Arrested in Walgreens Theft, Assault Incident

Chief Antonio DeVaul from the Takoma Park Police Department announced the arrest of Mohamed Sheriff Kanu, 33, of Silver Spring, Maryland, for theft and assault.


Per Takoma Park Police, “On May 27, 2025, at approximately 1:39 p.m., Takoma Park Police responded to a reported theft and assault at Walgreens in the 1300 block of University Blvd.

The store manager reported that a male suspect, later identified as Kanu, attempted to leave with unpaid merchandise and got into a physical altercation with the store’s security guard. Surveillance showed Kanu filling a bag with merchandise before being confronted. After a struggle, he fled the store, returned briefly to try again, and was stopped by a witness.  Kanu fled the store again.

Officers were flagged down and directed to Kanu’s location behind the store. He resisted arrest but was taken into custody without further incident. Kanu was arrested, charged accordingly, and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.” A mugshot was not provided.
