The Maryland Zoo’s Penguin Coast (One Safari Way in Baltimore, MD) is home to North America’s largest African penguin colony, where visitors can observe and interact (pet, etc.) these unique birds as they waddle, swim, dive, and eat in an environment designed to mimic their natural habitat.
Guests have the opportunity to take part in a special 30‑minute Penguin Encounter that provides an up-close view of the endangered African penguins. During this encounter, a guided keeper presentation offers insights into the lives of these penguins, complemented by special photo opportunities and chances for close interaction.
The encounter takes place outdoors, so guests are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and wear closed-toed shoes. Sessions are designed for small groups, with a maximum of eight participants per encounter, ensuring an intimate experience.
The encounter schedule varies by season: from March to December, sessions are held Tuesday through Thursday at 1:50 PM and on Friday through Monday at 11:20 AM and 1:50 PM; during January and February, encounters are offered on Friday through Monday at 11:20 AM and 1:50 PM.
Admission to the Penguin Encounter is available to adults and children ages 8 and older, with children under 8 not permitted to participate. Additionally, children ages 8 through 15 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult, following a ratio of up to three children for every adult. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are priced at $54 for Zoo Members and $64 for Non-members.
