Update: House Fire in Kensington/Silver Spring Displaces Two Adults and a Pet, Causes Significant Damage

A house fire in Kensington/Silver Spring resulted in significant damage Sunday night, displacing two adults and their pet. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded promptly to the incident.

Assistant Chief David Pazos shared via social media that the fire occurred at 10124 Meadowneck Court, located in the Kensington area with a Silver Spring address, with reports of “heavy” black smoke emanating from the residence. Initial assessments by the fire crews identified the fire originating in the garage, where the homeowner was attempting to extinguish the flames prior to their arrival.

By 8:55 pm, MCFRS had determined that the fire involved a hybrid car in the garage, which had extended to the second floor of the home. Fortunately, both occupants and their pet were able to evacuate safely. One adult occupant was evaluated on the scene for attempting to put out the fire before the fire department’s arrival but was not transported for further medical care. The fire was reported to be under control shortly thereafter.

On Monday morning, MCFRS chief spokesperson Pete Piringer provided further details, identifying the cause of the fire as accidental. The blaze was sparked by a misused charcoal igniting bag and nearby combustibles, including a wood chip fire starter, in the attached garage. The estimated damage from the fire is approximately $350,000, including the loss of the vehicle.
