Even in a 48-18 preseason loss to the New England Patriots, the Washington Commanders found some bright spots. Despite missing 30 players, head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt were encouraged by the performance of several young players, most notably rookie defensive tackle Johnny Newton.
Rookie defensive tackle Johnny Newton, a second-year player, was a major highlight. Whitt noted that Newton had a “good day,” with “really nice rushes” and “one-on-one wins.” After dealing with injuries last season, Newton looks healthy and ready to take on a significant starting role. His strip-sack was one of the few big plays for the Commanders.
Other rookies also made a positive impression. Josh Conerly played well at right tackle, holding his own against Patriots starters in both pass protection and run blocking. This performance suggests he could be a solid rotational player or even a potential starter. Cornerback Trey Amos also stood out, showing good coverage throughout the game and early on a deep ball to veteran Mack Hollins.
At running back, rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt (also known as “Bill”) showed promise with his decisiveness and cutting ability, despite a low yardage total. Veteran Demetric Felton had the best night of the running backs, leading the group with 42 yards on six carries.
The quarterback battle for the third-string spot continued. Rookie Sam Hartman struggled, completing less than 50% of his passes and throwing an interception. Veteran Josh Johnson fared better, going 15 for 22 with a touchdown and an interception, and appears to be leading the competition.
The wide receiver depth chart also remains a question mark. While rookie Ja’Corey Brooks impressed with five catches for 59 yards, others struggled. Chris Moore had a costly drop on third down and missed a later long pass, while Luke McCaffrey was sidelined for most of the game by an illness after trying to give it a go.
The Commanders will be back in action on Monday, August 18th, against the Bengals. The team hopes to have a better showing and get more questions answered with a healthier roster.
