The Washington Commanders are wasting no time in making adjustments to their roster following a disappointing performance in their first preseason game. The team announced a series of moves today, including three new free agent signings and several releases, signaling a clear message that competition for roster spots is wide open.
Among the moves, the Commanders signed cornerbacks Essang Bassey and Antonio Hamilton Sr., and linebacker Duke Riley. These additions come on the heels of a rough outing for several players in the team’s preseason debut, which reportedly led to a flurry of tryouts for new talent.
A major point of concern from the game was the play of rookie linebacker Dom Hampton, the team’s 2024 fifth-round draft pick. Hampton reportedly struggled in the contest, and his performance is believed to have been a catalyst for the team’s swift action in bringing in new linebackers for a closer look.
To make room for the new players, the Commanders released defensive end Viliami Fehoko Jr., cornerback Allan George, and linebacker Dominique Hampton. In addition, the team placed offensive tackle Lucas Niang and cornerback Kevon Seymour on the Reserve/Injured List.
