San Francisco 49ers Acquire RB Brian Robinson Jr. in Trade with Commanders

In a significant move ahead of the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement to trade a 2026 6th round pick for Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. The trade, pending a physical, was reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, who stated on social media that Robinson will join the 49ers’ backfield, adding “added punch” to their run-heavy offense.

The acquisition provides a fresh start for Robinson and a valuable complementary piece for the 49ers, who are looking to manage the workload of star running back Christian McCaffrey. The deal also signals the end of Robinson’s tenure in Washington, where his future had been in question for several days.

The trade comes as no surprise to those who have been following the situation in Washington. Rumors of a potential trade began to heat up prior to Robinson being held out of the Commanders’ second preseason game. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the team was considering moving on from Robinson, citing a “lot of moving parts this time of year” and expressing confidence in the team’s depth at the position.

The Commanders’ decision to part ways with Robinson, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, appears to be a combination of factors. The team has a crowded running back room, and the emergence of rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt seems to have made Robinson expendable. Additionally, with Robinson set to hit free agency after the season, trading him now allows the Commanders to get something in return rather than losing him for nothing.
