Could the Commanders Bring Back a Familiar Face at Quarterback?

The Washington Commanders’ preseason has concluded, and while the team has a clear hierarchy with franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels and veteran backup Marcus Mariota, the battle for the third quarterback spot has left coaches with more questions than answers.

The unimpressive performances of both veteran Josh Johnson and second-year player Sam Hartman have fueled speculation that the team may look for an outside solution, with former Commander Jeff Driskel emerging as a potential candidate. Jeff Driskel is currently a free agent, who looked good enough last year to earn a roster spot behind Daniels and Mariota.

Throughout the preseason, the competition between Johnson and Hartman for the QB3 role has been a secondary storyline. However, neither player capitalized on the opportunity. In the preseason finale, Hartman, who started the game, struggled with turnovers, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. His performance was described by some as “painfully obvious” that he would not make the 53-man roster. While Johnson’s performance was slightly better, he also had his own struggles, including an interception in the end zone towards the end of the game.

The lack of a clear-cut winner in this position battle has created a void that the Commanders may need to fill before the regular season begins. While a team may choose to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster and place a third on the practice squad, the subpar play from both Johnson and Hartman raises concerns about their ability to step in should an emergency arise.

This is where Jeff Driskel enters the conversation. Driskel, who was with the Commanders in 2024, is currently a free agent. Known for his athleticism and experience as a journeyman quarterback, he could provide a stable and reliable option at a position of great uncertainty. Driskel’s familiarity with the organization could make for a smoother transition with Mariota dealing with Achilles tendonitis during the preseason.
